  1. This story of originality starts again every time a new film is successful, then all the others arrive with direct comparison with sequels, reboots etc. Maybe I’m wrong.

  2. “Yeah man! People want original movies! See how good this one is doing?! Don’t look at all the other flops, just look at this one!”

    >The biggest feather in the cap of originality at the movies came two weekends ago at the Oscars when the two big winners were “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners,” [two films that found audiences despite not being franchises](https://www.indiewire.com/news/box-office/sinners-box-office-profitability-analysis-1235117258/) or even based on IP in the way “Project Hail Mary” was based on a Weir novel.

Uhhhhh…. OBAA was adapted from a book. Not a 1:1 adaptation by any means, but why call PHM original only to immediately point out it was also adapted from a book?

The rest of this is just “Hollywood needs to make original movies and people will come back”, which inevitably shifts to “well they’re just not good enough” in the event that they fail which in turn just boils down to “just make good movies” which is the most flimsy criticism you can make

  4. At least Mickey 17 and Oppenheimer had the excuse of most people not knowing about their source material

I’d love original movies based off original screen plays, but I definitely prefer bestselling books over superheros, sequels and legacy sequels.

  6. *Audiences want popular book adaptations, an ending where the good guy wins and for the good guy to be reasonably attractive or, like, really funny

The reason this is such a success story is because audiences typically want the exact polar opposite of originality. They want nostalgia and remakes and slop.

I remember when Barbie was lumped in with “original” movies when it came out and was a success.

People want good movies that have a good hook. It’s not sure to be a hit but when it does, hey great.
