I just want to know how it ultimately performed.

  1. Applying the 2.5x rule, it made 20 million+ in profit. On top of that merchandise sold for a lot and while it had a disappointing disney+ debut it’s legged out. So it’s a mediocre success

  2. It did okay. Probably could be qualified as a “modest success”. Definitely not a bomb or flop, but not some huge success either. I have high hopes a well received sequel after Doomsday + Secret Wars could do much better after these versions of the characters get more exposure with the Avengers

It did alright. For something as highly anticipated as the MCU’s version of the Fantastic Four, it should’ve done _much_ better. And it probably would’ve had it come out before all the phase four and Disney+ crap that preceded it.

It was something like a small flop. Not total flop because it didn’t lose money but it was well short of expectations for sure.

A lot of people had huge expectations like $800M+ after the first weekend. I think it landed at $520M? Which ended up being a tiny profit but still.

Fantastic 4 is a huge deal in Marvel. I’m sure Disney were hoping for a lot more than what they got.

  6. It didn’t lose money. But Disney isn’t into making these huge movies just not to lose money.

It made $521,858,728. That’s great for a Fantastic Four film, not great for an MCU one, where their films average in between $700-1 billion. Especially in today’s era, where $600 is the lowest for a comic book film.

I think it barely made a profit or was in the middle of being a flop and a hit.

  8. I overestimated this film. It’s a modest success, but a great one considering the popularity of the characters after 20 years of subpar films.

  9. Yeah there’s a big opportunity cost in making these movies so if the studio would have projected a $20M profit before they produced the movie they would have made changes or cancelled it. $20M profit ain’t enough for movies like this.

It did ok. I never understood why this movie’s performance was treated so harshly. Yes, the legs weren’t good, but it still made ~2.87 times its budget. That’s better than Superman’s multiplier of ~2.75, yet that film is seen as a massive success compared to F4.

I’m just happy both made a solid profit and were actually good films given their previous adaptations.

Domestic box office was fine for a first outing..I think Marvel incorrectly gauges how much audiences have been clamoring for their “first family.” But taken as the first film of a franchise, it did great domestically.

The foreign box office was disappointing, which is a concerning MCU trend.

  12. When you compare it to previous F4 films, major success. Brand repair on the F4, also great.

Box office. Average compared to other MCU entries.

  13. It was not a flop per se, but it had terrible legs, which is not promising for a sequel. I don’t think a F4 sequel would open as high as the first one

  14. The problem is never its overall number but its leg, it was expected to be bigger based on initial data but collapsed very soon

  15. This one wasn’t just about box office, but getting people excited for the MCU again and setting up Doomsday. It didn’t flop, but it certainly didn’t do as well as they were hoping.

Didn’t bomb which has been the case lately but I’m sure they were hoping for 700m+ especially with good reviews this was supposed to be their tentacles.

For a bunch of TV actors leading the third reboot of this IP, it did good.

The first fantastic four (2005) made 3x its budget, the sequel just about broke even. This is just theatrically. I was a kid when those came out, and there was merch EVERYWHERE. Plus, home release. Last year’s movie had the merch, but a sluggish start on Disney+.

Within the MCU, they are supposed to play a vital role in the next Avengers movies. So, there is some worry there.

Overall, I would it would say it was decent and fell short of expectations.

Personally, I think the 2005 Fantastic Four is still the best they have done with these characters.

They could never convince me this movie was a flop, even if I personally didn’t enjoy it. 521 WW is good for a CBM especially in this new era

DOOM declares that it was a COMPLETE FAILURE, as befits the FOOLISH REED RICHARDS! His PATHETIC PROPAGANDA alienated all audiences, who SAW THROUGH HIS LIES!

    GLORY TO LATVERIA!

  20. It did fine. The fact that it got low-diffed by Superman though is extremely funny the way people were comparing the two after the first trailer for F4 dropped

  21. It’s a mild success. Nothing to celebrate, but probably enough that they will try one more time and make a sequel after Secret Wars in hopes that their roles in the two Avengers movie will make more people interested and give it a big bump like it did for other MCU sequels.

I think if Doomsday is a hit, they really should fast track Fantastic Four 2 so it can come out quickly after Secret Wars (maybe the December 2028 movie) in order to avoid losing momentum. I’d argue one of the biggest issues with the current MCU is long gaps between character appearances.

Other than two post credits scene cameos, Captain Marvel had no proper appearances in the 4.5 year gap between Endgame and the Marvels, and that was a big mistake.

We also had to wait over four years after the Falcon and Winter Soldier show to see Sam and Bucky again in Brave New World and Thunderbolts. And by the time Doomsday comes out, it will have been five years since we last saw Shang-Chi.

This is an example of a profitable film which is still seen as somewhat of a disappointment. But that is not the film’s fault. That’s about studio expects and that it was intended to be a course correction for Marvel. They made a good film and on a fraction of their intended audience showed up in the numbers they expected.

Underperformance but not a flop/bomb. Much like Superman or Man of Steel.
