Project Hail Mary, from Amazon’s Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, was the No. 1 film at the US and Canadian box office this weekend with $80.5 million worth of tickets, scoring the highest grossing debut of any movie this year.

The film’s performance in its opening weekend surpassed Creed III as the best for an Amazon title since the company acquired MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022. Industry tracker Boxoffice Pro had forecast sales of at least $70 million. More than a fifth of Project Hail Mary‘s box office came from IMAX screens.

Since closing the MGM deal, which handed Amazon control of film franchises including James Bond and The Pink Panther, the e-commerce conglomerate has pledged to release more than a dozen pictures in cinemas annually before making them available on its Prime Video streaming service.

I have yet to watch this. I really hope it lives up to all the hype and positive reception I’m hearing about.

    3. Felt like a live action Pixar movie. I really enjoyed the film and the dynamic between Rocky and Ryan. A great and well done film

This is one of the few times I will a movie is too short. They needed another 20-30 minutes. They speed ran or glossed over some things that probably should have been included or expanded upon. But it’s enjoyable

    5. I read the book and went in expecting something very different from what we got but I was pleasantly surprised. They did a great job of adapting the material for the big screen.

I enjoyed it. It was a good movie, and a good adaptation of the book. Of course a lot had to be cut out, it always does, and I would have liked at least some more “competency porn”, but it was already 2.5 hours long so 🤷

I don’t think it quite made it to “great”. It was good, solid, entertaining, but not the exceptional experience I was hoping for.

Maybe it was the lack of self cannibalism.

      Still, definitely recommended.

While it was a really good movie, I feel like it lost a bit in translation. I really missed the charm of the book.

It’s a good and fun movie.

Yes – they cut out some details and background from the book, but the spirit and main themes are still captured and done well.

I read the book, and I think I might be in the smaller group that likes the movie more than the book.

    9. Very solid. The first half a little slow. The second half was very good and engaging.

I loved it. It felt like Pixar’s version of Arrival meets Interstellar. I kinda knew going in that the tone was going to be more “silly” with Lord and Miller directing, and honestly, with that caveat it became my favorite movie of the year so far.

Read the book losers. It’s dope as hell and really easy to read and grasp ahold of. Cant wait to watch the movie.

    12. I couldn’t stomach the book (Weir’s writing grates on my soul) but I loved the Martian so I’m excited to see it in movie form.

I imagine Ryan Gosling is much more charismatic than I was picturing Weir’s character in my head, and that probably carries the movie.

But I was assured by the CHUDs that Melania is the Amazon movie of the year

I think “fun movie” is the perfect descriptor. My 12 year old LOVED it.

This movie really should’ve been at least 3 hours or ideally 3.5 hours. The story happens too fast and it’s edited like a trailer.

Loved the audiobook but the movie didn’t live up to it.

The live adaptation didn’t fully capture Rocky and Grace’s friendship.

And Rocky being a genius in the book was not depicted entirely.

So either watch it in the theater or on Amazon. Any chance of a DVD/Blu-ray release?
