    Sonic 4 vs Godzilla x Kong SN

    I know it's weird to analyze 2027 films a whole year out when Dune and Spider-Man are blowing up the conversations but for someone like me when your top 2 favorite ongoing universes in Hollywood involve a blue hedgehog or a dinosaur gorilla match up, you can't help but anticipate them finally clashing against each other unless the studio who technically owns both decides to push a few dates around.

    SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: (2020-)

    • Films: Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3
    • Reception: 73% average
    • Overall: $1.217b on a budget of $305m (x4.00)

    MONSTERVERSE: (2021-)

    • Director: Adam Wingard
    • Films: Godzilla v Kong, Godzilla x Kong E
    • Reception: 64% average
    • Overall: $1.042b on a budget of $295m (x3.53)

    Alright with the basic stats out the way lets now compare what upcoming the next chapter of both series has strengths to leverage and weakness to overcome!

    SONIC 4:

    + Jim Carry returning

    + More of Keanu Reeves via Shadow

    + Kristen Bell as Amy Rose

    + Direct influence from 1996 Sonic the Hedgehog movie

    + Strong anticipation building upon a trilogy

    – Potential 2nd drop against competition

    – Guaranteed to flop in countries like China, Japan

    – Massive rumored $240m budget

    GODZILLA X KONG SN:

    + Space Godzilla confirmed

    + New director Grant Sputore refining the GxK formula

    + Godzilla is leading a crossover film

    + Budget likely kept within the $150m range

    + Only few Hollywood IP's to consistently perform well overseas

    – Awful TV spin off possibly hindering excitement

    – Inevitable Minus Zero comparisons

    – Risk of being a two part finale which audiences may not want to commit

      Sonic’s going to win domestic, but Godzilla and Kong will win everywhere else

      Monarch is far from an awful TV show. Sure, there are some weak characters and plotlines, but everything from the past timeline is great.

      It’s interesting to see which of these 2 American-produced Japanese IP films will have the highest box office gross & Sonic 4 seems to be the highest on the production budget (even if there isn’t a potential IMAX release for the former despite it being pitched to the IMAX CEO by the film’s producer back in late-2025)
