I still wouldn’t be surprised if one of them DOES bail out to Christmas Day given that **Jumanji 4** opens only a week before both. December may be able to support several blockbuster films, but 3 coming out so close to each other is a different story if 2018 is any indication.

Avengers Dunesday is happening folks, believe it or not.
What are your predictions for it?
The most interesting thing for me is Avengers Doomsday opening weekend will only be available in Dolby and seating in Dolby is LOT LESS compared to IMAX, so getting a ticket for it on opening weekend could be problematic.
And the other thing is both of these movies have mostly the same audience, so this might not be a Barbenheimer situation.
Either way both movies will do good, if not great.
My prediction:
Avengers Doomsday – $1.5B WW
Dune Part 3 – $700M WW
Avengers Dunesday – $2.2B WW

because Marvel wanted to play box office chicken and I’m sure some executive would be pissed to miss out on bonuses if Doomsday were to be pushed to next year (similar to the JL situation in 2017). ⊃∪∩3 had its date and IMAX screens locked down for quite a while and they aren’t budging
I wonder if Marvel/Disney will try and strongarm theaters into sharing some IMAX screens for opening weekend. Like telling theaters to give ⊃∪∩3 the matinee times and Avengers the evening ones

I suspect that when the Avengers trailer comes out, things will change. I can’t understand why they’d want to create an event that hasn’t been created since Barbie and Oppenheimer. If that happens, I think Dune will be the lowest-grossing film of the period. Maybe I’m wrong.
misguidedkent on
>Neither film is expected to blink, which is surprising to box office watchers because there’s so much overlap in the target audience. Although “Doomsday” has four-quadrant appeal, both of the tentpoles have male-skewing fanbases. After all, “Barbenheimer” was a classic case of counter-programming; the two films at the center of the cinematic phenomenon — Greta Gerwig’s bright pink comedy “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s extremely dark historical drama “Oppenheimer” — catered to very different demographics.
So both of them are highly likely to eat into each other’s grosses. How significantly is the question.

WB I think is buying the idea that the MCU is dead/dying and people will flock to Dune 3 instead.
Sad_Teaching_5683 on
If Brand New day reach atleast 1.4 Billion mark i really think Doomsday will hurt Dune 3 more than many people think
Considering there’ll be Tobey Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman wolverine,Thor ,Rdj, Chris evens, in Doomsday
If Brand New days good that’ll give more hype to Doomsday
AdministrativeLaugh2 on
Unless Doomsday is really, really bad – like horrendously bad – Dune 3 is going to lose out. Even with IMAX.
There’s too much crossover in audience and there’s Jumanji releasing a week before. Not enough people will go see all three of them so close to Christmas.
It’s clear neither Dune nor Doomsday wants to move at this point
Vadermaulkylo on
Stupidity. Thats why. WB is making what is gonna inevitably be one of the dumbest studio mistakes we’ve seen in our time. They need to delay this to early 2027 while they still have the chance.
whiteshark70 on
Both movies play to an older male skewing demographic so I think they’ll eat into each other. Honestly I think it depends on how well received Doomsday is. If it’s well received then I think it can hit upwards of 1.5 billion. But if we’re getting another Cap 4 (or if Spiderman BND is poorly received) then I can see it barely squeaking the 800 million – 1 billion mark since I think it has a higher floor with RDJ and Chris Evans back.
Dune 1/2 were pretty well received so I don’t think Part 3 will be that different in terms of reception, so it’ll probably hit at least 500-600 million (though that’s a conservative estimate since 2 hit over 700 million)
MikeTheChampP1 on
These studios never learn. Major movies releasing so close together is the dumbest thing. We gotta throw in the fact that Jumanji 3 is dropping a week before too.

Still think this is a mistake by both studios, but whatever, it’s going ahead and as a fan of both franchises, I hope both films benefit from this “Dunesday” event. I’m sure they’ll try to lean heavy into that as the marketing ramps up for both films in the Fall. We’ll see if this risky gamble pays off!

In this sub there are a lot of hardcore superhero and Marvel fans, so we’ll see comments saying Dune will flop or lose box office just to mask their frustration that Avengers won’t have IMAX, and that’s going to be a big hit to its box office.

Disney knows that Doomsday is going to be the biggest movie of December (possibly even 2026) so they have no incentive to move but i have no idea why Warner Bros is so hellbent on releasing Dune 3 on the same day as Avengers Doomsday.

Dune 3 is currently has an IMAX majority while Avengers 5 doesn’t & only has an International majority but things could change later this year if another Hollywood strike results in both films end up getting delayed for a larger IMAX release window for its worldwide majority (mainly for Avengers 5)

I would like both films to thrive to the fullest at the box office very surprised both want to release same day. Think both would hurt one another with dune sticking to their original date I do hope avengers changes it day to. Very early prediction avengers 1.5 and dune 770. Doomsday has to be bad, like, next level bad, for Dune 3 to overtake it. Dune 2 opened in March so it’s not like it was facing the stiffest of competition and it had one weekend at number 1. I’d argue that there is an outside shot that Doomsday, if good and well reviewed, could gross more in its opening weekend than Dune 3 grosses in its entirety.
Dune 3 not moving is just a stupid move I think on behalf of WB. The last time a MCU movie that was full of nostalgia bait in mid-December, it crushed everything in its path, so I have no doubt this could do the same.

I don’t understand why the default view of this is: “What is the WB thinking?!” It should instead be: “What is Disney thinking?!”
Dunesday was born into being after Disney moved Doomsday’s release date to Dune 3’s release date, 12/18/2026. Disney could have picked any date on the calendar and it chose 12/18/2026. If there is any studio that should be looking inward at its decision-making, it’s Disney! They chose to go up against the 3rd movie in a well-received franchise with bankable stars and a proven Christmas corridor draw in Timothee Chalamet
The stakes for WB are really quite low – 3rd movie in a promised trilogy with really no expectation of more movies with this director & cast. Denis is moving on to direct James Bond and the cast will find work regardless of what happens. The December release date also will help position it for Oscar nominations. The stakes for Disney are quite the opposite – if Avengers doesn’t succeed (not saying it won’t but just imagine it with me for a moment), then what for MCU?
Good on WB for fighting the good fight, keeping the date it wanted first and securing IMAX exclusivity in the U.S. in the process. I have zero sympathy for the position Disney put itself in
Same_Bag711 on
