The expanded nominee period is definitely misleading. The whole idea of doing the increase was a response to Dark Knight not getting nominated, and they specifically said they were doing it to get more box office movies into the nominees.
That having been said, the box office movies which do get nominated always feel like token nominations. They never get discussed as serious contenders. Avatar 2, Barbie, Top Gun, etc, were never considered serious contenders, despite getting the nominations, and likely wouldn’t have been nominated at all if the best picture were still limited to top 5.

Seriously, though. *Gone With The Wind* made $189.5m IN 1939 MONEY. That boggles the mind.
