A big selling point of Godzilla was having a dinosaur or dinosaur-like creature roaming a big city with the latest big budget special effects. The Lost World did exactly that one year earlier, significantly reducing Godzilla's novelty. Had Godzilla been released in the summer of 1996 as originally planned, could it have been much more successful?

Possibly, but that movie wasn’t amazing anyway so.
Godzilla’s box office was pretty good tbh. An exec at the time even said it made enough that ‘of course’ they were going to make a sequel- which didn’t happen probably due to rep.
Lost World might’ve had a little effect, but the main problem with Godzilla was legs, which was do to people watching it and giving eh word of mouth.
I mean yeah it could’ve been more successful.
If they’d actually made a Godzilla movie and not try and ripoff Jurassic Park
OP definitely wasn’t around for Godzilla ‘97’s release, because it was a huge hype fest for months leading up to release. The only thing that kept it from succeeding was it being bad, and WOM was toxic as hell.
