Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid released in China 10 years ago. The $61M Romance Fantasy Comedy became the first movie to surpass $400M/$500M+ in China and the first to sell 70/80/90M+ tickets finishing at $533M and 92.5M tickets sold. A sequel was filmed in 2018 but has still not released 8 years later.

The post mortem on Part 2 once it does eventualy come out will be wild.

It apparently finished filming in 2018 but Stephen Chow wasn’t satisfied with some of the effects so the post production dragged on well into Covid. Then 2 of the actors involved in the film both had scandals. One being rape charges and convictions resulting in their removal from the film which meant more reshoots, more re-edits, more post production to the point where the movie suposedly at this point had 11 scripts and is a completely different movie to the one shot in 2018.
