With Fast XI still in limbo with no indication of progress in its release, the collapse of this franchise is a perfect storm of bad circumstances:

  • The pandemic delayed F9 by over a year, if the pandemic didn't happen we'd probably have had Fast XI by now
  • the WGA strikes derailed the writing process on Fast XI
  • Vin Diesel's behavior on set and attendance issues causing Justin Lin to quit directing for the franchise
  • Unsustainably high budgets requiring complex practical stunts across many international locations
  • Furious 7 felt like a solid conclusion to the franchise, making audience retention more challenging
  • On-set tensions between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, leading to the spinoff delaying F9 and a Fast & Furious movie without Johnson's Hobbs character

The steadily declining interest since Furious 7, with each box office total both domestic and WW progressively getting lower and lower for each main installment (excluding the spinoff), Universal executives became more bullish after Fast X failed to surpass F9 despite not being released during the pandemic. Even the added star power of Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, and Alan Ritchson failed to increase audience interest from before.

I say this franchise is currently 'dead' because there is no indication of any progress on production of Fast XI. Vin Diesel spreading misleading Instagram posts about Fast XI being in pre-production only reinforces just how chaotic this franchise has gotten.

Not to mention zero updates to any of the spinoffs:

  • previously announced Hobbs vs Reyes meant to be released in between Fast X and Fast XI which is effectively dead in the water now
  • Zero updates on the female-led Fast & Furious spinoff announced all the way back in 2019.
  • No signs of the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff ever getting a sequel even though the ending clearly set up an overarching villain.

Are any of these particularly big names people would go see a movie for? Especially Alan Ritchson, he’s great and all but realistically he’s best known for a streaming series (Reacher) at this point.

  2. I always thought Paul Walker was the soul of this franchise. He kept Vin’s ego in check and was there to provide a counter balance to Vin.

Once he died the franchise essentialy started to focus entierly on Vin and that just didn’t work. The set pieces got more and more outlandish but the plot in turn got worse and worse.

  3. While reviewing Fast & Furious 9, an Indian reviewer delievered hilarious line in full rage mode,

    >“Vin Diesel got with a milking cow in *Fast & Furious* and he’s squeezing it dry. Because without this franchise, the guy would be jobless.”

  4. Good, Fast and Furious is dumb as fuck past the first movies. Yo, let me just fly from THIS skyscraper to THAT skyscraper with my bugatti, and hey lets drive that 20 mile runway for a fifteen minutes, or crash 100mph with another car coming 100mph and get a small scratch
