Sony’s 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE couldn’t break AVATAR’s box office blockade, finishing 2nd place w/ $13M this weekend, $15M over the 4-day holiday.

  1. Brutal. Hopefully it at least hits that $15M for the 4 day in the actuals because i don’t think even that is really safe at this point.

  2. >$15M over the 4-day holiday

    That’s half it’s predecessor’s 30 million 3-day opening from last year. Oof.

  3. Well, this was the expected result at the box office, since the previous film had a pretty bad reception from the public; don’t expect word of mouth to translate into good box office numbers either.

Wonder how low this could have gone had 28 years later not had an award-winning first trailer

Not sure what the pre-release expectation for 28 years was, but I always thought that the home video sales for days and weeks looked a bit low (relative to their internet fame)

  5. Paying for the sins of the first, unfortunate because this one has stronger scores across the board.

So cancellation or radical budget reduction beckons for Part 3 (hopefully the latter so that the trilogy has some kind of completion).

Waiting until part 3 for Murphy to be a lead is a weird decision in hindsight.

Blaming Nia DaCosta and not Alex Garland based on the audience dislike of 28 Years Later is pure bigotry but I expect that from certain posters on this forum.

Awful start…, but let’s wait and see if strong WOM kicks in.

Avatar Fire & Ash will remain the number #1 film 5 (!!!) weekends in a row.

It’s a real shame because it’s actually quite good, and will probably end up as a cult favourite. Mainly down to Jack O’Connell and Ralph Fiennes fantastic performances

Genuinely grim. That’s what happens when you make an incredibly divisive first movie that most of the audience didn’t like.

Not surprising, really. It’s a sequel to a polarizing movie that came out less than a year ago. I imagine it’ll find its audience, as will the previous film. Main thing is, it’s awesome that these movies are great.

Not a good start which is a shame I really love this one and the previous, this did get a A- CinemaScore so we can expect much better legs then 28 Years but this is definitely low

Does anyone know the budget for this?

An annoyance I have to clear up re: the comments here citing Cinemascore as proof that audiences like Nia’s film more than Boyle’s and if only they’d kicked off with a film like this they’d be in better shape:

A large reason this film has a higher Cinemascore is reflected in the box office. The people who showed up for this are the people who loved 28 Years Later. 28 Years Later drew a more varied audience than this one did. That’s it!

The truth is zombie movies have never been huge box office draws. Highest grossing ever is Word War Z and then it’s a steep drop to Zombieland, Zombieland Double Tap and: 28 Years Later. Relative to the genre this film is doing fine and will likely perform well on streaming and VOD. Also it’s incredible and I wouldn’t change any creative choice that lead us to this point.

  14. The writing was on the wall after the first movie betrayed the expectations that people had with that amazing first trailer, that promised an almost Attack on Titan-like survival horror thriller.

The moment 28 Years Later had the half-way tone switch, it killed whatever trust people had with this trilogy.

People wanted the bleak zombie horror that the Boots trailer promised, but instead we got a contemplation about death followed by evil and edgy power rangers, which the general audience clearly didn’t respond to.

28 Years Later had an almost universally acclaimed marketing, which says a lot, because it clearly lied to the audience about the kind of movie they were going to see.

Super weird timing on this movie. January dumping ground for a horror movie when the original did numbers in the summer. Either June or October would have been a much better move.
