Always seemed that the sounds of footsteps were too dominant in many of the 1970s movies. What was the reason?

I’ve always wondered the same thing. I find it genuinely annoying how in most pre ~1990 movies every scene a character is walking in has the same pitched-up “clop clop” sound that rivals the dialogue in volume.
No idea but it’s one of my fav parts of older movies
