In Shrek (2001), Donkey may not be a generic talking animal, but specifically the musical talking donkey from the lesser-known Grimm fairy tale “The Bremen Town Musicians”. This would make his habit of breaking into pop songs a subtle addition to the film’s theme of giving fairy tales modern twists.

    1. The Bremen Town Musicians bring me good memories. I remember when I was younger, I had a cartoon on DVD adapting this fairytale.
The title around here would be “Os Saltimbancos”, talking animals running from a farm and travelling together.

I thought it was mostly assumed he was one of the boys who made an ass of himself at Pleasure Island. Isn’t there an interaction between him and Pinocchio that implies that?
