In his nightmare, Josh Brolin's character is searching for his son Matthew when an assault rifle with 2:17 appears above his house.

Matthew 2:17-18 is a Bible verse about a mother weeping for her children "because they are not." The full verse reads:

"Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, Lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, And would not be comforted, because they are not.”

Matthew 2:17 explains that the massacre of male infants in Bethlehem, ordered by King Herod, fulfilled the prophecy in Jeremiah 31:15. This prophecy, originally referring to the Babylonian exile where Rachel, the mother of Benjamin (whose tribe included Ramah), wept for her exiled children, is reinterpreted by Matthew as being fulfilled in the context of the slaughter of the innocents in Bethlehem.

My feelings were that the movie was a metaphor for children lost to gun violence/ school shootings. And the effect it has on the community, such as blaming the wrong reasons for the deaths( the teacher being blamed). And that the younger generation will eventually rise up and make a change(the lost kids killing the aunt/witch themselves) Just my impression.
