One of the absolute greatest movies ever made, about an incredible true story.

Wtf. 492 scenes
Edit: 2h 52m film, 745 scenes. Scene 492 on the slate doesn’t match the script though:
“492 ANOTHER ANGLE – THE GOON TOWER GUARD
walks around his perch, looking out over the hole.”
Why would anyone wish to escape Elon’s holiday camp?

Wild how the cut on Steve’s shirt inspired today’s modern day drop shoulder/over sized T shirt.
I still think Rick Dalton would have been better in that role.
FYI, the one actor’s name is James Garner, not Gardner.
Donald Pleasence who played the forger deserves a mention. Back in WW2, he was a radio operator on a Lancaster that was shotdown. He ended up as a POW in Stalag Luft I. He met the leaders of the escape there before they were transferred to Stalag Luft III.
Apparently when Pleasence offered some suggestions to the director, Sturges, he was told to keep his opinions to himself. Sturges was then informed by some other cast members that he was the real deal and was then consulted.
In reality, whilst there were some from other countries, almost all were RAF so no Americans, just some Canadians.
