Marketing didn’t help this movie. If I’m Netflix or some streamer I’m reaching out to Guy Ritchie to make more of these, this was a really fun movie

    3. Sincerely, a great flick and if I’m being honest with myself, as much as I love Excalibur, this might just be slightly better. I love the over-the-top storyline of how Arthur becomes embodied by the spirit of greatness itself. Combined with Guy Ritchie’s style, it turns into something really exceptional.

There’s this almost mythological energy underneath the whole film where Arthur isn’t just a guy who becomes king. he slowly grows into he weight of legend, and the movie leans into that idea instead of trying to make it grounded or overly realistic.

Anybody who put time and effort into this film, I believe, will get their recognition in time.

    4. No one in the world will ever convince me that this movie is bad, I fucking love it. You ever seen anything like it? Not one of these run of the mill boring ass AI bot movies we get now, this shit rules

    5. I know this movie wasn’t received well but I honestly enjoyed it as a fan of Arthurian story’s. It’s a fun shut off your brain and just enjoy the ride kind of movie. Also enjoyed how much of a punch Excalibur gave when the fights got going.

I love that we are all on the same page on this one. It was extremely fun and the visuals were pretty bad ass.

I’m a big fan of these type of movies from Guy Ritchie. Now bring on Sherlock Holmes 3!

    7. That Arthur aint young. He was 15 on most traditional arthurian legends.

    8. Between the recent Pacific Rim post and this, ya’ll are posting some of my favorite random and underappreciated/over-hated movies! This movie rules SO hard. Love it!

Amazing they were able to give him such a clean hair undercut back then.

    11. These haircuts, with the shaved sides and slicked back top, are pretty funny for a historical flick. Looking back these will read much more as a mid-2010s movie than a historical epic.

“Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!”

I honestly hold this as one of the greatest marketing fuckups… most people enjoy this film but imo the marketing killed it. This was during the big 3D everything phase that audiences got tired of super fast.. the theatrical trailers were decent but the tv promos were horrible. Guy Ritchie is a master of pacing and keeping things fun and I always think about the what if…

There’s an alternate reality where this movie explodes, we get a King Arthur sequel and the studio green lights Sherlock Holmes 3.. that of course means we could have lost “The Gentleman” and/or “TMOUW” as the studio would lock Ritchie into a multi year exclusive deal instead of his current multi studio partnerships but I can’t help but wonder if we missed out some really good movies..

This is great, but I would love a film interpretation of the legend where Merlin used arcane (scientific) knowledge to assist Arthur to import 5th century Asian industrial metallurgy technology necessary to “pull” improved iron from a stone to make a prototype sword that was leaps and bounds better than those made from forging technology of the time. Wanting to keep the technology hidden and cement his legitimacy, they would lean into and perpetuate the myth that it was of divine / magical origin while arming an insurgency with the secret technology to usurp the throne.

I’m tired of it always being a literal sword embedded in an actual rock. That makes no sense.

It’s really interesting how many* in the comments seem to enjoy this movie!

I remember seeing it in theaters on release because i enjoy Guy Ritchie, i enjoy Charlie hunam or whoever that guy is, jude law too i think is in this, i love Daniel Pemberton. I did *|not|* enjoy this movie.

I only ever saw it that once in 2017 i suppose, and i’ve largely let it go from my mind by how barely i can remember the plot, but iirc the plot, pacing, and writing, some combo about those three aspects did not work for me. I’ll try and watch it again some time, maybe it’ll play differently a second go around.

    17. I’m still so annoyed that this whole universe was scraped. This movie was great and really laid a great base for a movie series
