I think this is one of Scorsese’s best movies (that never makes the list of his “best movies”). The amount of frenetic energy in this movie was insane; made more impressive by the fact that Scorsese was 56 when he made it.
Fantastic performances by every cast member. The best showcase for the scuzzy underbelly of New York since Taxi Driver. Didn’t do great at the box office because it’s pretty bleak and dreary.
The cinematography and editing are top notch.

This is the scene that always comes up when someone mentions this movie, and it’s a great one, but it was the crazy night driving shots that really stuck with me. The frantic pace, wild angles, and surreal lighting of totally mundane subjects made them look both weirdly familiar and like nothing I’d ever seen at the same time.
