Isn’t this just a revival of the fairness doctrine, that long time bogeyman of conservatives that hasn’t been a thing since the Reagan administration?

Isn’t the equal time rule about giving equal time to candidates for public office? They either follow the directions of the FCC or file a lawsuit in court. They are simply trying to get outrage.
