      They could not have done it entirely with CGI without waiting an additional 7 years or so.

      It is awesome and expertly made with miniatures. But they absolutely could not have done this sequence at the time with CGI. Explosions and clouds and destruction like that is very hard with CGI and it took a long time for technology and methods to be able to render all the particle effects they would need for this sequence.

      The T-1000 effects in the movie were indeed groundbreaking in 1991, but I have a hard time thinking that CGI was a real possibility for all of the elements we see in this sequence (the vehicles, the exploding buildings, the vegetation, the dirt, dust, smoke, fire, and other particles, etc.). The rendering alone would have taken ages.
