i’ll never forget the silence, the entire theatre was just so invested & in amaze!!
That scene is a masterpiece….till that tiny firecracker explosion…wtf was Nolan thinking?
My corny idea for a fan edit is to take this scene and then cut in a long chunk of Twin Peaks: The Return, Episode 8.
I still honestly cannot believe they went with that explosion in the final cut. One of they very rare cases where a directors choice to use practical effects was a significant detractor.

Did Nolan just not, like, review any images or accounts of the Trinity test? He’s got them lit by some kind of cool (in terms of color-temp) arc-discharge lamp; but people who were actually _there_ say it was like sudden daylight.
Aside from the incomprehensible focus on Lewis Strauss, and the incomprehensible choice to have his most famous line (from the Bhagavad Gita) be something he reads off of Florence Pugh’s tits, it’s like the most ill-considered scene in the whole movie.
For the material they both covered, I can’t think of anything “Oppenheimer” did better than “Day One” (1989), the AT&T TV movie about the Manhattan Project.
I hated this bit. The explosion didnt even look remotely nuclear, I wish they had used CGI. The “zomg only practical effects” crowd was salivating, but it couldve looked way better and more accurate….
I got the same feeling with this scene as I did with ‘dangerous’ science experiments at school.

A loud involuntary snort was made by me at the theatre when I saw the explosion. Literally looks like a cheesy 80s action flick explosion going off. Because that’s what it is. Just a gas fireball.

Very underwhelming in the theater viewing . People were looking around at each other like “really?”
I don’t think anyone would’ve been upset if they recycled and upscaled real nuclear test footage and maybe combined it with the decent looking closeup shots of the practical effects. It was just really underwhelming how small it looked.
