But they're just firing guns, what about Transformers and all these amazing CGI stuff? That's all fake crap made by a computer. These dudes had a full on shootout in downtown LA with real guns and real bullets (blanks). Just the SOUND of this scene is so intense. The way these dudes act like Navy Seals with how they move and reload and think on the fly. I'm from southern California so I know exactly where it was shot and I literally drove through there last Friday to have lunch with a friend.
The scene is so simple. Bank Robbers having a shootout in downtown LA. But damn, how they filmed it and told that story really made the movie. I bet this scene was discussed a lot when the movie came out. I can't image watching this in theators with the sound……..imagine being from LA and watching this in theaters. DiNiro with an M4 in a suit, his goatee, and sunglasses fighting against Al Pacino? Gold.
I've loved Al Pacino since Scarface (my GOAT movie) and I've been on a DiNiro kick. I never saw all these older movies as a kid. I also saw Casino. Man, I have such a newfound respect for Robert DiNiro. These dudes are old now and it won't be long before we're all speaking about them in the past. I want to give them their flowers today. I wish I could thank DiNiro and Al Pacino and even Joe Pecci.
I was born in 1990 so Joe Pecci to me was the robber from Home Alone. DiNiro was the dad from Meet The Fockers. And Al Pacino was the guy from scarface.
We don't really have these stories and characters anymore. The world is so insanely different. What a beautiful moment in time
I recently saw the Irishman and it was decent bc it's so obvious they aged. Made me a little sad seeing Joe Pecci so old.
Al Pacino in scarface is still the ultimate character arch in any movies I've ever seen. From the gutter to the peak of Everest and then right back to the gutter.

Heat is an all time great film.
The bank shootout grabs hold of me and throws me into car doors and walls every time I rewatch.
It’s one of the best for a reason. That bank shootout is so awesomely choreographed too. I need to give Heat a rewatch asap.
Heat is really special. It’s got a lot of ingredients Mann had used before, but the cast, the soundtrack and sound, the way it was shot, the pacing… everything just comes together to make a great film. It’s one of the few movies I feel like I can just rewatch and rewatch and find something new to appreciate every time.
Dive into the making of that scene. Welcome to the club
Agreed on the sound. The gunfire echoing through the canyons of downtown LA is so incredible.
Because a she’s got a…GREAT ASS! And you’ve got your head…ALL THE WAY UP IT!”
Seriously an all time great film. Check out “Thief” as well.
I heard the military uses the Val Kilmer reloading scene as part of training. That’s so cool.
Surround sound makes that scene so awesome. I kept thinking I should duck.
All of the actors got weapons training from SAS veterans.
There was an actual bank robbery in LA where the robbers had full auto weapons and body armor, I always wondered if that was an inspiration or just coincidence
What I actually thought was most impressive the first time I watched it was how insanely loud the guns are. You know, like in real life. There aren’t many movies that accurately illustrate the true noise levels of guns. The way Heat did it added so much intensity and impact.
Have you seen the first two Godfather films? If not, it’s another opportunity to see Pacino and DeNiro do some terrific genre work.
If you want to iterate on Heat’s type of story and themes specifically, you can check out Mann’s other films- specifically Manhunter and Thief. They are older and will look it in some regards, but they are otherwise connected in ways that explore similar character and motivation.
There was a documentary series on HBO a while ago called one perfect shot and one of them was with Michael Mann and the shootout scene Heat how they filmed it. They had gun sound effects ready for it until they realized the amazing echo sound the buildings made in downtown LA from the blanks so they scrapped it and used the actual noise
[Hey, I just saw Heat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Imhcq5s9OLs)
And they’re making a sequel, here’s hoping it holds up.
People really glaze the hell out of this movie and I’m just not sure
That scene in San Pedro at the docks when the team has been made was great
My favorite movie all time
I’m extremely jealous of you being able to watch this movie for the first time
A while ago, I saw a video that compared *Heat*’s shootout with a similar one in *Den of Thieves*. They had similar structures, buildup, camerawork, and so on, but *Heat*’s was better. The presenter used that to segue into sound design, saying that the sound was *Heat*’s special sauce.
Because holy hell, can Michael Mann do sound. The booms, the bass, the echoes… Watch the briefcase shootout in *Collateral* and even the pistol feels impactful as it just flattens the soundscape to make room for itself.
Saw it in the theater. It was so loud and my mind couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing.
Even the deafening noise of DeNiro firing off his M4 in the car.
Top tier heist movie.
“For me, the action is the juice”
Heat is the ultimate “gun guy” movie, in the best possible way. Michael Mann is himself very much a gun guy and it shows.
However, I must nitpick and point out that the gun De Niro uses in the shootout is not an M4, although identifying it as such is entirely understandable as it is another short-barreled AR variation – it is a Colt Model 733.

Read up on what it took, production and actor prep for that 1 scene… That’s some amazing film making
The scene wasn’t just discussed, it was imitated. We had a real shootout at a Bank of America a couple years later (1997) where two guys robbed a bank with machine guns and tried to fight their way out against cops. You can watch the videos online. The robbers were inspired by the movie.
Since you mentioned Casino, a lot of people don’t realize that Casino and Heat were released in theaters three weeks apart. THREE. FREAKING. WEEKS. Unreal run for De Niro.
First time I saw the shootout scene, I found myself banging on my coffee table, repeating “GIMME ALL YOU GOT!! GIMME ALL YOU GOT!!”
Used to test many surround sound systems back in the day.
Learning it was a main inspo for Nolan making TDK made so much sense after watching
Michael Mann has made some real gems. He can make a city feel absolutely *alive*
I kinda remember the marketing for this where there was mention of Pacino and DeNiro being together again since Godfather yet it was apparently(?) the first time they had scenes together. It was hype.
I implore you to read Michael Mann’s Heat 2 which is a) both a prequel and a sequel and b) the framework for the upcoming Heat 2 with (rumored, alleged, whatever) Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Pacino, Ana de Armas, Bradley Cooper, Austin Butler, Channing Tatum.
The prequel part is about Neal and his crew ripping off cartel safehouses while being pursued by a serial killer psychopath and his crew of home invasion rapist thieves.
The sequel part is about Vincent’s continued pursuit of Chris Ciherlis and Chris’ recovery in Latin America and Asia while working for a crime syndicate.
Amazingly both stories merge in the final 50 pages.
It’s so visceral. Best shoot out I’ve seen in film.
That scene from Heat is probably the best movie shoot out scene ever made. They way that Kilmer moves and communicates and shoots is damn impressive. He trained with professionals to shoot like a professional. The aggressive, rapid fire of the robbers vs the more conservative, deliberate fire of the police. Absolute masterpiece.
Ashley Judd hot AF in that movie
I watched this and the Town as a double feature recently
In high school, there was a guy who’d bring a dvd copy of Heat to house parties. He’d also bring a referee whistle. At midnight, he’d blow the whistle and yell “Heat Time!” and he’d have secretly lined up that shootout scene on whatever TV was the largest. Everyone would stop what they were doing and watch the entirety of the shootout. He did this at every party. I think he’s a federal judge now.
“But they’re just firing guns, what about Transformers and all these amazing CGI stuff? That’s all fake crap made by a computer.”
Can we stop with this crap? You understand that hundreds of artists get together to create 1000s of shots for movies, it’s not just a computer doing that.
Yes, there is always a place for practical FX don’t get me wrong, but we’re also living in a time where people look to cut corners and steal from existing work by making AI slop and insert it into our shows, movies, advertisements, etc. We need artists now more than ever to create and that includes VFX.
VFX artists create in the same way other artists create over the filmmaking process
Have you seen Goodfellas yet?
Check out My Cousin Vinny if you already haven’t.
You’re not the only fan of Heat. [Tom Hiddleston recited the diner scene fully impersonating both de Niro and Pacino – to de Niro’s face.](https://youtu.be/MFhhPDcPNvI?t=131)
