Still one of the cleanest “cinema is magic” transitions ever. It’s not just the color shift; it’s how patiently the movie lets the moment breathe before everything gets strange. Nearly a century later and it still feels like the medium showing off.

  2. For those who don’t know, the transition is accomplished by filming in full color, but painting the house interior sepia toned and using a stunt double in a sepia dress and makeup to open the door. Once the door is open, a fully colored Garland steps outside into the fully colored exterior.

  3. If you get a chance to see it in a movie theater, I encourage you to do so. If you grew up watching this movie on TV, the theater experience will give you a new appreciation for the sets.
