Ahhhh the late 90’s. It was a fun time at the movies. The new millennium was approaching and so we got a slew of theologically themed moves. Fallen is a great triple feature along with Stigmata and End of Days.

What I loved about them most is the antagonistic force is mostly hidden. Maybe not as much in End of Days with Gabriel Byrne taking Satan’s “form” and a very primitive cgi monster at the end, but they were all a hell of a lot of fun.

such a solid film! the mix of crime and supernatural elements makes it stand out. that scene at the station was super chilling, for real.

  3. anyone watch this recently, if so, does it still hold up? i remember liking this movie but that was when it first came out.

  4. I loved this movie, but honestly I hate the ending. It’s by far the weakest part of the film, and a total cop-out.

It’s established earlier on that Azazel can only possess those with a soul. And, despite being a life-long cat and animal lover, no offense to them, but if they count as “having a soul” for the purpose of this power, then it completely eliminates the stakes of the conflict.

Denzel won not through immortal powers, or sheer brute strength, but cunning and self-sacrifice. That’s how villains like that SHOULD be defeated. You outplay them.
