‘That’s Still Under Bezos’ Magical Halo’ — The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Remains On-Track for 5 Seasons at Amazon as It Becomes TV’s First $1 Billion Series
‘That’s Still Under Bezos’ Magical Halo’ — The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Remains On-Track for 5 Seasons at Amazon as It Becomes TV’s First $1 Billion Series
Based on the ratings they should have called it Rings of Power Bottoms, amirite?

I don’t care what people say, I like the show. Yes it goes against a lot of the lore, and as someone who’s gotten into the deeper Tolkien lore a lot the last couple years that is annoying, but the show is just entertaining and one of the few fantasy shows where I don’t have to worry about someone getting raped or any other edgelord junk happening.
In a world full of Game of Thrones rip-offs (and spin offs) having a big budget fantasy show that, quite frankly, is a bit classy and not trying to shock people is really nice even if the actual writing quality can be iffy and it definitely isn’t as loyal to its source material or even the spirit of its source material as it should be. On the other side of the spectrum it’s also not a YA show, aka the only other type of fantasy show that’s generally been allowed to be on TV for the last couple decades, which is also nice.

Imagine all the other shows they could create with that money.

Can they spend some of the budget on some writers?

This show is decent, enough for me to stay watching. Season 2 was a bit better than Season 1.
But man, this could be soooo much better.

A billion dollars to look bland and have terrible writing and get mocked by everyone.
Jeff, hit me up I’ll mock you for a cool hundred million.

I’ve literally never heard someone talk about this in the wild

I’ve really been enjoying this show. The internet says I should hate it, but I liked it a lot more than Severance season 2 and most other recent television I’ve watched.
It’s a lot more true to the spirit of Tolkien than the Hobbit movies at least.

Good, the second season was a nice improvement over the first. I’m looking forward to the rest.

the show’s fine. I get that it’s still cool to hate on it, and it’s by no means a storytelling masterpiece but the last season was genuinely gripping and only the odd bit of contrived nonsense here and there (grand elf? really?)
I don’t really care what a show costs though- and I find it quite odd that this would factor into someones enjoyment “oh i liked the show but it was e xpensive to make” is an alien concept to me.

I enjoy it. Would I trade it for a full 5 or 6 season run of Wheel of Time? Sure. But I’ll keep going with LOTR if they keep making it.

Why wouldn’t it be?
It’s one of their more popular shows.
I thoroughly enjoy it and don’t understand the hate.
It’s just taking forever between seasons.

I forced myself to finish season 1. Honestly, as frustrating as Wheel of Time was, I was way more interested in seeing where it went. They cancelled the wrong series.

Nobody likes this show and I’m convinced anyone on the internet that pretends to works for Amazon. It has zero cultural footprint and the only people that have see it make fun of it.
It probably could have been very good twenty years ago when the industry wasn’t so dispersed and they had a heavyweight lineup of superstars working on it. Instead they just handed a monster budget to people that didn’t really know what they’re doing.

Is Prime just, instead of conceding they got this one wrong, attemping to write and spend their way out of disaster?
The first season of Rings of Power was as much of a let down as the first movie for Lord of the Rings was a complete triumph.
I’ve watched no episodes of season two, was suprised it has a season three and am not at all sure what its doing getting a fifth season. I suppose, they simply want to complete their vision and whats hundreds more millions to Prime anyway eh.

They already prepaid for most of the show, so it’s going to get made no matter what.

Listen, I hate this show. I think butchers Tolkien’s story and it is poorly acted.
The music – slaps. It’s fantastic. The only redeeming part of the show.
But after suffering through season 1 and 3 episodes of season 2 I cannot, for the life of me, tell where the money is being spent. Every set is small and claustrophobic. The costumes look synthetic and modern. The prosthetics for the orcs is solid but other than that, I have to assume it’s for CGI. And that isn’t even that good!
It’s probably just going into someone’s pockets.

Rings of power is the most watched prime show of all time.

Definitely more Tolkien than Peter Jackson’s trilogy which, ironically, is why it’s much less popular. The Tolkien estate chose Amazon because Amazon has the money to make a series that isn’t just a nonstop action flick designed to appeal to teenaged boys and young men.
Might be boring if you don’t like Tolkien but I’ve really enjoyed it except for the Harfoot parts, which are going away next season.

I like it. Pretty much everyone that doesnt is just a redditor, so you get a totally different impression on here. Wouldnt be making so much if nobody liked it.
