that opening scene is super intense, really sets the tone for the whole movie. the way they build tension before dropping you into the chaos is just wild.

Oh yeah just what we needed, another “the real victims of the Iraq war were the soldiers who murdered the Iraqis they illegally invaded” movie. Topical.

  3. Saw this a couple of months ago. It is very tense and realistic, but honestly I didn’t really connect. Probably because there’s really no character development. They’re all pretty cookie cutter military types. Still, an interesting watch.

  4. This film was so well-made and I’m very glad I saw it in a theater with a good sound system; the IED was so all-consuming that I had to sit there thinking about my breathing so I wouldn’t hyperventilate. My cousin who was deployed twice to Fallujah said it was one of the most realistic depictions of war that he’s seen (he also liked 1917, ’71, and Three Kings, and hated The Hurt Locker so use that as your guide there). The entire audience was quiet when we were walking out at the end, usually people are talking with their friends about this and that scene from the movie we all just watched, but everyone just seemed shocked and were completely silent.

The movie is well made; sounds, looks, and feels great. The only thing this movie lacks is scale and character, as in there are not many locations and the characters have no arcs or any stand out traits. But that’s okay cause the movie knows what it is. A military drama with tense action in a small enclosed environment with a timeframe that is set in a few hours long window of time. It’s basically black hawk down, without the black hawk, the hundreds of extras on set, or multiple filming locations. But it does have one of my favorite endings. With out any spoilers, the soldiers leave and the neighborhood comes out of their hiding places and basically just survey the carnage and damage that took place In Their literal backyard. Nothing more they can do about any of it so they just begin cleaning up.

  6. There are movies that use music to create tension, this movie flipped it and I loved that. The silence was menacing.

  7. Saw this in IMAX. I went during a matinee and was a tad intoxicated and was I think the only person in the theater.

I was very very confused at the opening at first and then couldn’t stop laughing. Then the rest of the movie sobers you up very quick

  8. The sound is this film, especially when seen in a theatre was incredible.

I loved the sound of the heavy machine gun going off (I think in slow motion), after the IED explosion.

    It was mesmerising.

For those unaware, this was cowritten and codirected by one of the marines who was part of this battle, Ray Mendoza. Some scenes were too emotionally visceral for Ray, so Alex Garland directed those scenes. When writing the script, Ray worked with many of the other marines to get their memories of the event as well.

This film use of time is so great. The performances are top notch as well.
