This is coming to a cinema near me and I'm torn on whether or not to buy a ticket.
Here's a trailer for the curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-TGaGa3QAc
On the one hand, I'm totally ready for some over-the-top hyper-stylized action and really interesting costumes that look like a mash-up of several eras. I'm also good with hammy or stilted acting and a parade of references to cinema and history.
However… I find Quentin Tarantino really hard to watch on screen. He's always my least favourite part of his own movies. And I can imagine him feeling even more jarringly out of place as the only non-Asian actor and a clear fanboy of the director.
So… Do you think it's still worth watching? How much Tarantino is there? And what did you like or not like about it?

I’ll watch it, but because it looks fun not because of Tarantino. Also probably definitely not in theaters but who knows
Miike basically just uses Tarantino as like this weird gunslinger narrator thing – he pops up maybe 3 or 4 times total and yeah his acting is pretty awful but its not enough to ruin the whole experience. The movie is pure Miike madness with all that Western meets samurai aesthetic you mentioned
I caught it few years back and the visual style alone made it worth watching. The gunfights are completely bonkers and the costume design is incredible – like if someone threw spaghetti westerns and Kurosawa films in a blender with bunch of theatrical makeup. Just go in expecting something totally bizarre rather than coherent storytelling and youll have good time
He’s mostly featured via flashback. It’s been years since I’ve seen it, but I don’t recall being terribly annoyed with his screen time. He really hams it up, but the movie is put together in such a way that his part kind of calls for it.
if you’re into wild stylized action and quirky references, it might be worth a shot. tarantino’s role is definitely there, but it doesn’t overshadow the overall experience. just go in with the right expectations and enjoy the ride!
Haven’t watched it in years, but I remember loving it. Silly and over the top in all the best ways.
Minor aside, but if you watch it and DO enjoy it, I highly recommend The Good, The Bad, The Weird which is a Korean Western that’s HEAVILY inspired by The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Very similar in tone and style to Sukiyaki
This is a decades old movie and it’s a ton of fun. Tarantino’s barely in it. Just a cameo.
Man, I haven’t thought about that movie in a looong time. Pure style. Some of the sets give it a kind of live theater vibe that I thought was interesting. It wasn’t mind blowing, but I enjoyed it well enough.
I’ve watched both TGTBTWeird and Sukiyaki Western Django during the last 2 months..( via library loans) and liked them both..but, I sorta expected that from the get go. Sukiyaki starts slow, w Tarantino’s opening scenes..and then delves into the story. There is both hard violence and Eastern philosophy almost at the same time. ..and the costumes are awesome. TGTBTW was ultimately more fun, imho, but both are recommended if you’re willing for something familiar but wildly different… 🤠
That movie is great fun. Tarantino really didn’t hurt it at all. If it had been a more serious film I wouldn’t have liked him in it but it’s pretty light hearted so it’s fine.
It rocks.
I remember renting this in college for my big group of floor mates after being excited about the trailer. Ended up having to apologize to everyone for how bad it turned out to be. That being said, that was about 18 years ago, so I’d give it another shot.
This movie is wild. The costumes, sets, and fights are great, but what I love the most is you can tell the Japanese actors just learn the English lines phonetically. It’s like the best worst acting ever
I hate this movie. It’s just bad. Poorly paced, badly written, weak action sequences (shockingly so, as Miike can do them very well), most of the characters are thin and cliched in a bad way, they’re also annoying and obnoxious, and on top of that the English is so bad it actually hurts my brain struggling to listen to it. QT isn’t in much, but it’s also the worst role he’s ever had.
Just watch Django (the 1960s film) instead, it is a vastly better film. It’s the worst Miike film I’ve seen, easily, out of around a dozen.
