Every frame of this film belongs in a museum. A huge win for practical sets over pure CGI !!

Really happy for the team to get the wins in so many technical categories because they seriously outdone themselves there.

Frankenstein was incredible. Del Torro deserves all of these awards.

There’s got to be a word for the kind of Marvel post-production where you find out something was actually a practical set that you thought was all green screen. Because even though they did use practical sets there’s still this CGI sheen of artificial schmoo over everything, even when it’s just two characters talking in a room. Like it’s great that the laboratory was all practical but then there was all this fake sunlight coming in from a CGI rendered skyline.
Was the hole in the lab really there? Maybe, but I can’t tell. Were the giant vats of green sci fi liquid really full of green sci fi liquid? I can’t tell. Did Oscar Isaac really climb a lightning tower? I can’t tell. It seems like so much effort to go to to just then coat it in digital paint.
I will admit to being massively disappointed with Frankenstein (and Crimson Peak, its closest relative) and the CGI stuff is a big reason why. What would have been lost with matte paintings? it would have looked too artificial? If so going through and airbrushing everything into perfection was misguided. I guarantee that the work print of Frankenstein looks better and more interesting than the finished product. What’s the point of practical, physical, analogue sets when everything looks digital anyway? Hellboy had practical sets mixed with CGI but the CGI wasn’t painted over EVERYTHING, it was used to enhance and supplement the set design. Genuinely hope this instagram filter bullshit is just a trend and it’s heartbreaking to see Del Toro of all people leading the charge and succeeding by doing so.

honestly this makes sense because the sets in that movie were insane… i remember watching a scene and thinking someone spent months building that room.

Well deserved, I just kept wondering who and how did they build those unbelievable sets.
The movie was alright but the production was on a league of it’s own.
