Jesse Tyler Ferguson felt ‘incredible’ pressure to represent LGBTQ+ community on ‘Modern Family’

  1. I’m not a member of that community but watching that show doesn’t make me feel great about how it’s represented. So many personality quirks are attributed to ‘being gay’ versus just their own personalities. All their gay friends are just absurdly over the top stereotypes, whose only interactions are based on them being gay rather than…people. Obviously people are going to be portrayed to extremes in a sitcom but it’s more than just that…straight people can be over the top in ways unrelated to their sexuality, but gay characters are always specifically related to them being gay.
