There just aren’t that many worth seeing. My wife and I only went three times last year.

Hell House LLC, 28 Years Later, and Weapons. That’s it.

Life is getting too hard for the average person to waste time leisurely on something overpriced & potentially shitty.

A healthy economy means people can waste money on fun stuff, but if people are living paycheck to paycheck, then there’s no time for fun.

Why do you think Vegas has seen an enormous decline in the last few years?

  3. 44, loved going to the movies but I don’t think I went once in 2025 either. They just haven’t given me a reason. I got completely burnt out on all the MCU/superhero stuff years ago and everything else just looks boring or just ok. I do miss the experience though, especially with comedies. There was always something really fun about laughing your ass off in an audience that’s also losing their shit at the same time. I know the franchise eventually kind of killed itself, and the whole thing was just done to death, but watching the first hangover movie in theaters was an experience.

I go every Tuesday on $5 night, I saw more movies last year than I have in many years.

  5. Rather wait and watch it at home. 100″ TVs are affordable now and the extra spectacle of a movie theater isn’t worth the inconvenience and discomfort of going there.

It’s pretty simple: why pay $25+ to sit in a theater with loud, inconsiderate people using their phones the entire time? My TV at home is fantastic and has great surround sound 🤷‍♂️. Improve the experience and reduce the ticket prices and maybe people will come back.

  7. going to a movie theater is a miserable experience. bigger screen and better sound..and that’s it. instead, free, comfort and privacy of my own house with just my wife, pee breaks whenever i want, free (well, not technically) snacks, no showtime to make, no shitty moviegoers to worry about, no sticky seats.

I go once a year at least. We WANT to go. Let the movie makers know that weird movies will do OK.

I love going to the movies but it’s become more of a once in awhile kinda treat as buying tickets and snacks it’s like $60 for my wife and I. It’s just gotten very expensive

Before covid, my folks and I would see one once a month, sometimes twice a month. Now? Maybe every three months. It’s too expensive, hordes of annoying kids…hard pass.

I think the vast majority of people don’t want to go to the movies alone now and days. This is a reflection of the current longlines crisis. There’s an argument to be made that tickets are to high, but $18 to $25 is not breaking a low income persons bank so I don’t think that’s a reason for the decline. Going to the movies use to be fun but everyone now wants an event film to go see that won’t subvert expectations or a children’s film to have a fun time with their children. The audience has completely abandoned the middle ground due to tv (streaming shows).

So that’s something in the neighborhood of 170.5 million Americans going to the movies at least once last year. Nowhere else in the article does it state how the 53% number compares to the rate of previous years

There’s a lot of reasons for this, but I think a big one that doesn’t get mentioned immediately (like cost or shit quality movies) is the pandemic did something to people’s brains and made them forget about theater etiquette. Nobody wants to hear your conversations, nobody wants to be flashbanged by your phone screen every 5 minutes, nobody wants to accidentally see you getting a handjob in the back row.

  14. Since January 2023, I have been to the movies 5 times. All 5 times were for Avatar screenings

The movies have always been an activity more than a destination and a lot people don’t leave their houses anymore. They’d rather spend their time shopping and scrolling while half paying attention to some slop on streaming.

I blame the threat that emerged in late 2019 and changed the world forever.

    Cats: The Movie.

AMC A List member here. I go at least once a week.

    I get it.

Better TV’s at home. Don’t need to deal with random people. Don’t need to spend 50 – 89 bucks to go see IP v55.

The one thing which bothers the shit out of me is, movie theater chains could be much smarter about this. They could choose better programming with better incentives.

Example: My local AMC has 19 theaters. One IMAX, one Dolby, one XL. The rest are laser vision. In theaters 15 – 19, schedule old movies, hits from years back. Schedule a run of Carpenter films in October or action flicks from various directors/stars in the summer. At the same time, make those showings $5 with a coupon for x percent off concessions. Make your programming more interesting in the hopes of people seeing more than one showing and spending money for popcorn, candy, etc.

    Be more creative.

  18. Ghibli Fest, Chainsaw Man Reze Arc, and Zootopia 2 were definitely highlights for me but it’ll always feel like taking a gunshot to the wallet. Especially IMAX staring me in the face and asking for $25.

Avatar (while personally middle of the road) was another big draw, but that doesn’t undo the socio-economic circumstances we’re all in

I legitimately haven’t been to the theater since seeing Avengers Endgame and don’t really ever an on going again. Its way too fucking expensive
