Actors at the AACTA Awards are asked if they watch foreign films subbed or dubbed, Shabana Azeez: “Subbed! Ew! No, I can read. Being literate is in.”

I can understand watching dubbed animated films, but for live action subs are the only way to go.

I watch *English* language movies/shows with  (English) subs most days 😭

Meanwhile, her co-star on The Pitt can’t even read her name right apparently. I wonder why-t.

I appreciate her plug for literacy, but not everyone can read with their eyes. I’m visually impaired and I really benefit from dubbing. It also creates opportunities for voice actors who are often under-employed.

I watched Part 1 of JoJo dubbed. I feel like the cheesy Victorian dub was perfect for the tone of that part. Everything afterwards, strictly sub.

I can’t take dub. Everyone sounds like they got knocked in the head.

I love subs! Sometimes I’ll forget I’m not fluent in certain languages tho and I’ll glance away from the screen like a fool hahah 😅

Relatedly, there is something so–fun and humbling and gratifying! about understanding multiple languages and watching a film where you understand what is spoken and what is written, and you can tell that every word of the spoken dialogue AND the written translation was chosen with care.

Reading an excellent subbed translation when you already understand the original language is kind of like getting to see an extra long shot of the sea. It can add depth and color to a world you may only have a few short hours with. Even reading a mediocre subbed translation can be amusing, bc then you get to cheerfully grumble and say, ‘that’s not right! they translated that line literally, not idiomatically!’ Love it hehe

Feeling very strongly about “subs only! Eew, who listens to dubbed?” kinda reminds me of the people who make a big deal out of “pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza!”

Not the sub vs dub debate in these comments 😭 long time anime fans clock in!

Subbed for sure, I’ve tried dubbed and its just not the same. There’s something about hearing the voices of the original actors

Live action? Subbed, every time. I grew up watching way too many hilarious Spanish dubbings of American movies to ever watch dubbed live action again. Anime? It really, really depends. Sometimes the dubs are just as good, if not better like Dragon Ball Z and Super, Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, FMA: Brotherhood, etc. …emphasis on DBZ/S 🤭

If you’re on your phone while the movie is playing you are not watching a movie. What the fuck.

Can’t multitask and then describes multitasking.

I’m not sure who that person is but they’re the reason movies are now telling you what’s happening instead of just showing you.
