Thelma is one of the greatest film editors of all time. She knew in the moment you probably wouldn’t notice the jewellery but you would notice the performance.

His wife is Jewish and didn’t he tell her parents he’s half jewish? He probably has it for the in laws and wears the cross the rest of the time.
Remember, in the film his wife is Jewish and he’s Catholic. He lies to her parents that he’s half Jewish. I think he wears it to make them happy or when they’re around (Or more like, get off his back). I don’t think it’s a continuity error. It’s actually a good choice.
