  1. Trivia: the inspiration for this shootout, which is not how the novel ends, actually comes from the prologue ~~beginning of the previous novel, The Big Nowhere~~.

    If you’re looking for some of the very best in American crime literature, check out James Ellroy’s LA Quartet: The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, LA Confidential, White Jazz.

    Can’t recommend it enough.

    EDIT: Correction: It comes from the *prologue* of LA Confidential, not the very end of The Big Nowhere. In my defense, the sequence largely serves as connective tissue between the two.
