Hollywood has rallied behind the late 'Dawson’s Creek' star, raising $2.6 million for his widow and six children. But the internet has been less generous, with scores of posters wondering why such a famous actor would need a fundraiser in the first place.

The down payment for the house so they could mortgage it is what’s really confusing me. I don’t understand why their friend would help them secure a house that they knew they could not afford to live in? And they had to have known that, considering according to the GFM they were at immediate risk of losing the house. No doubt we don’t have all the information here but that part just makes no sense.

    2. I have been trying to raise money for two and a half years for three or four families in Gaza, including raising money for medical treatment and food and tents

I can barely get $20 from people, I’ve burned through my own savings

And this family spent most of the last few years trying alternative therapies ?

      Like no

I’m trying to raise money for my cousin to have her baby via Caesarian in Gaza next week. If you can help please let me know

No, he didn’t. He bought a ranch. He just wants his family to keep the same rich lifestyle.

    4. People are not acting like he was a billionaire actor or that his family should be destitute. I recognize that he likely didn’t have a ton of money, but in that case, his family should have started making plans for the future that would be within their means. There is no reason that they should have purchased a gigantic farm if there was no money to maintain it.

The reality is all of us are living within our means, and yeah, we’re going to side-eye the celebrity asking for donations to maintain a celebrity standard of living.

    5. I personally don’t think he died broke and anyone who thinks he did is purposefully ignoring all the info we have gotten in the aftermath of his death . It’s just that his wife wants to continue on living the life they all did when he was alive for the foreseeable future. She seems to be a tradwife influencer/podcaster and I don’t think that really pays the bills and they also have 6 kids. It’s also interesting I just saw the kids are all homeschooled, so it’s not like she’s in dire need of money to educate them at this very moment. This is all very icky , and it’s insane that people are essentially paying for a millionaire’s family to continue being millionaires… bravo

This article was absolute crap- took a stance as to not tick off celebrities, and didn’t answer it’s own question of how much he had when he died. It did list some good figures of what he made from various jobs, which really tells me he was “very rich, b-tch,” in my best Nene Leakes voice.

    7. I can’t understand this mental leap people make to assuming just because someone is famous they are automatically wealthy. It’s such an illogical conclusion to draw.

    8. I don’t think he wasn’t negative numbers broke, but he wasn’t wealthy enough for his family to sustain their lifestyle.

    9. I feel like a reasonable conclusion here is that you could just not donate without playing internet detective. The hollywood people that did are going to be fine?

You would think that he had life insurance once they had their first kid. Heck my friends have life insurance and have zero kids.

That’s why you live within your means so shit like this doesn’t happen. People in the real world do it all the time.

If you choose to have six kids, you have to have a plan in place, especially if there’s only one breadwinner in the family. I also know what it’s like to desperately try any treatment possible when traditional approaches are not working. I empathize, but not enough to give them money. I also will forever side eye his wife for all the misinformation she has spread.

The article also seems to gloss over the fact that they still owned their home in CA that was leased out for $12k a month at one point.

My mind can’t wrap around their decision to buy a $4.5 million house if they couldn’t afford it without the support of their fans. Most people in that situation would have downsized because that’s their only option to survive. Some people would actually be at risk of being on the streets. It feels so financially irresponsible of them and a bit tone deaf to then go ask for money to support them because they couldn’t let go of their current lifestyle.

We fear going into poverty and becoming unhoused.

Celebrities fear having to live slightly below the obnoxiously, luxurious lifestyle they’re accustomed to.

Even when they’re “broke,” they’re not like us.

Sell a second or if he had, a third house. Those aren’t 100,000 plus houses. They are millions. They just don’t want to live below their station in life. But that’s what happens after divorce and death, your life does change.

    17. “It was a lot of ups and downs these past few years,” a family friend tells THR. “The last year, he really tried to do everything. After attempting the holistic route, he traveled and tried to get other options. He really wanted to live and had a lot to live for. He fought really, really hard.”

He only tried normal treatments in the last year?? He had no chance of recovery whatsoever.

He earned enough yearly to qualify for insurances but the treatments he sought were most likely not covered because they were not medical. The adults failed their children and were willing to let them grow without a father.

    18. Fuck James Van Der Beek. Fuck his greedy family. I hope gofundme refunds people who ask.

People with cancer in everyday absolutely crushed by medical expenses. Can’t get care because their shitty health insurance won’t approve treatment.

They planned to rip people off. You don’t buy 36 acres of property for legacy purposes if you’re really concerned about making it month to month. The property taxes alone are more than the average middle class mortgage.

    19. My favorite part was how his wife created a go fund me and made it seem like a family friend created it, but when you click on the link to the person that created it, it shows his wife’s name.

    20. I’m under no illusion that all high-profile actors are billionaires or even multi-millionaires; I just don’t understand why they’d ask for money from *us* when they have networks — co-stars, former employers, work friends, etc — full of very rich people.

    21. People keep bringing up life insurance. Has it been determined that he did not have that? Not that it’s our business, but I feel like everyone is jumping to the conclusion that having a GoFundMe means there wasn’t life insurance, there wasn’t health insurance, there aren’t any investments, etc.

    22. Wait…so poorer people are asked purely out of good will to fund “sustaining”
      a wealthier persons lifestyle?

    23. I feel like initial PR articles about his residuals etc were in the tone of revealing that celebrities aren’t as rich as we think but they are in fact rich and they just don’t know what regular humans experience. meanwhile the true revelation is that none of them are good at financial planning, they just always have some rich friend or sth to help out with their stupid choices

    24. Is it our business? Outside of our viewership it’s not our business how he lived nor is it our place to place beliefs that he had on him without any evidence. Let the guy rest if you care about his legacy so much
