Hi r/movies! I'm Colby Day, screenwriter.
I wrote IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. It premiered at Sundance last month and it's out on Hulu next Friday. It's directed by Andrew Stanton (director of FINDING NEMO, WALL-E, FINDING DORY, JOHN CARTER)
Starring: Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, Daveed Diggs, and Tanaya Beatty.
Three intersecting storylines spanning thousands of years explore the nature of life, love, hope and connection.

How do you know when a character’s internal conflict is strong enough to carry a film like Spaceman?
Liked spaceman. Gonna watch it again. You prefer sci-fi cuz it’s a great platform for philosophical musings?
Can you talk about how you built relationships with the production companies and studios that ended up producing your films? How long had you known the producers & execs, etc?
Is Space-Man a “twin movie” of Project Hail Mary?
Nice to meet you Colby. How did you know when your first few scripts were ready to try for sales? Also, did you have a cohort to come up with while starting out, and how did you find them?
Hi! Couple of questions! 🙂
– Did any actor reinterpret a character in a way that surprised you or improved the script?
– How do you know when a script is finished and not just “good enough”?
– Do you start with theme or with characters when writing something?
– Was there a specific mood or feeling you were chasing while writing this?
Thanks!! 🙂
As an actor, I’m always wondering what career screenplay writers think of as they’re writing, and if they feel like their works were executed well enough to share the story they created.
Production can get crazy, and I feel like there are some actors that forget we’re telling someone’s story, and they hold onto and create a sense of ownership of a role that might not align with what was intended.
What do you feel has been the best interpretation of your work, and which was the worst? What do you think contributed to either?
Most times I get little ideas, but I don’t know how to develop them. And I feel like I lack originality. Any tips ?
