Coming off Lonesome Dove, he played the Commander in the “The Handmaid’s Tale” (1990). I had watched a few seasons of the show and saw the movie as soon as I found out about it. I recall not liking it at all.

He could play a level-headed lawyer, a curmudgeonly tough old veteran, a dignified outlaw, a silent recluse, and here he plays a reprehensible dickhead.
Some truly fantastic range from a legendary thespian.

This is top tier. Yet Ned Beatty surpasses it in his monologue.
