      Not quite the right sub, however: I think he’s meant to be a broken man rather than just being evil. He’s the opposite of Elias’ counter-culture, civil rights representation of 1960s America.

      Now that we know we never should have been in Vietnam in the first place, this is what war does to some people. Throw a man into a kill or be killed situation and some guys are going to be like Barnes! War Is Hell! Is he broken or evil? Maybe neither!
