The scenes in which Capt Willard and Neo are lying or sitting while respectively Colonel Kurtz and Morpheus teach them the true nature of reality as they see it. The master – pupil positions. The glances, between Neo, lying on the floor, and Morpheus, standing over him, and then the almost identical short sequence between Willard and Kurtz a little later. The shadows and light; the close, whispered tones. Even the appearance of Morpheus and Kurts have echoes. Morpheus talks about the "pure horrifying precision" of the Matrix; Apocalypse Now ends with Kurtz' repitition of "..the horror… the horror". And, of course, Laurence Fishburne's first movie role was in fact Apocalypse Now. Is this is a nod by the makers of the Matrix?
