Everyone is stealing TV. Fed up with increasing subscription prices, viewers embrace rogue streaming boxes.

Who had an uncle or a grandparent that slipped the cable man $20 to make sure the ppv channels worked. Bonus points if it was one of those little brown boxes with red numbers And three buttons.

Borderline rule 3. I don’t have a problem with it. I wouldn’t pay for a $200 shit box either. Thank goodness we have a lot of more reasonable options here and across the seas

  3. I see these everywhere on facebook marketplace and flea markets. Really curious how many are actually out there because they seem to be everywhere

  4. I get why people would do this, but I’m very cautious when it comes to letting uncertain hardware into my home network. So far, just being choosy about what services I subscribe to– and hopping back and forth between them, never keeping more than one or two active at a time– has worked well enough for me.

I have found that overall, though, I am increasingly less and less interested in the offerings of streaming services. I can foresee a time in a couple of years where I honestly might not watch much of anything at all (outside of NBA games, personally).

We were too poor for cable for most of my childhood, but at some point Dad got his hands on a couple of cable descramblers, and finally paid for the most basic cable package possible so we could pirate to our hearts’ delights.

He watched blockbuster films and dirty movies. I watched a whole lotta pro-wrestling during an era where cable was saturated with it.

    Good times.

These vc boxes are everywhere. They have to be used as bot net slaves or some shit. I wouldn’t touch them but I see them all over ( barber, bars, random boomers houses)

  7. My dad has been bragging about doing this recently and some older people he knows are doing it. I honestly didn’t get the impression he knew it was not legit.

I feel like everyone I knew had a cheater box back in the day. Except for my family. My uncle would record the wrestling PPV’s for that month (WWF and WCW) for me on a blank VHS tape and them give them to me to watch when I came over. That’s how I became a wrestling fan. I’d watch 6 hours of wrestling while my uncle, mom and their friends would be in another room playing cards until 1am.

Then digital came and ruined everything.

So we’ve come full circle and are back to hot boxes. Thanks streamers. Couldn’t just keep it at $9.99

  10. My dad was getting “free” satellite service back in the 80’s. None of this is new. What makes it easier is that every service runs their signal across the internet therefore making it even easier to scrape and watch. For a $50 box and a $4 a month VPN you can watch everything. Not to mention the pirate boxes actually have a better interface without any scrolling Ads and constant tier pricing.

  11. I’ve got a dozen or so friends and family and family of friends on my Plex server, even before I upgraded and it ran like shit everybody was happy to put up with it for the price of free and having everything in one place.

Friends parents sent us a box of steaks.

  12. Not surprising.

You could also do this without a physical box as long as you have a computer or other smart device with access to virtually anything cable/steaming/PPV with very little effort or technical knowledge required, but I suppose most people aren’t aware of this and that’s why sailing the high seas is allowed.

  13. People are aware TV is still broadcast over the air, no? Just need a digital antenna and whammo . I mean other than a few basic channels it’s pretty garbage but so is the majority of paid TV options
