The "rope" he uses to hang himself is a Heart of Midlothian F.C. scarf. In other Welsh's work main character is most of time some "unfortunate bastard" or "scum of the world" that is aware of his faults, and who usually wants to change himself, so let's say a person with a heart on a right place, and it's always a fan or a sympathiser of Hibernian F.C. the biggest rival of Heart of Midlothian F.C.
