In a recent interview with Variety, Vince Gilligan touched on Hollywood's IP obsession:
“We live in a world of IP, where the safest thing to do is reboot something that has an audience. I wanted to prove to myself I wasn’t a one-trick pony,” Gilligan says. “It’s harder than it’s ever been to get something made that’s not based on a previous movie or comic book or video game. Every generation deserves its own stories, instead of just the stories of their grandparents.”
Hollywood executives were always risk-averse, but for the past 20 years they’ve taken risk-averse to the next level. While we are still getting original TV shows, there are way too many reboots/remakes:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Malcolm in the Middle
One Tree Hill
Prison Break
Friday Night Lights
Scrubs
Harry Potter
Clueless (Based on the 1995 movie)
Elle (Based on Legally Blonde movie)

Okay, but I really really want that Buffy sequel so please let it be.
This is the cornerstone of Capitalism with the Profit Incentive.
IP’s are prevelant, because they have a pre-installed fanbase. Less work, less risk. But yeah, he’s right, every generation needs original stories.
You can now add V for Vendetta to the list
