They knew audiences wanted more Sigourney Weaver in her skivvies. Still attractive today and with big 80/ls hair too. IIRC when Ripley became female in the first Alien, the climatic scene was going to involve her being stark naked but I agree with it would’ve been gratuitous and the scene did a fine job of making seem particularly vulnerable.
