Well, if he’s going to go down, he’s gonna take the whole damn franchise with him. Not even Star Trek V was able to pull that off, so good luck to him.

IMO, having this character be an aggressive warrior that was gay would have been a stronger choice.

They started filming season 2 before the first season even came out?? It’s incredible how people get to work on things and be so out of touch with the people they’re supposed to be making it for..

I need to read the entire article to get his context, but I think this is kind’ve the issue some of the critics may have with the show. Star Trek was always a political and social justice show but they built storylines as allegories. It’s very similar to how X-Men was a very radical political comic but they didn’t just outright hit you over the head with politics they intertwined storylines and characters as allegories. But I’m on the outside looking in at this discussion cause I’ve never seen the show or have read this article.

No wonder it got cancelled. They cared more about being woke than making a good show.

I really didn’t like how they made him a stereotypical gay man. Hey could have done plant based diet or pacifist but putting it all together makes him unremarkable in the crowd of “masculine adjacent” gay men. There is so many homosocial aspects of life that writers in general are allergic to

There’s nothing wrong with a gay Klingon. The problem is he was written by the people that already screwed up Klingons not that long ago with Star Trek discovery and that still has people reacting Badly to it. The overwhelming positive reception to Bortus and his family on the Orville tells me SFAs gay Klingon story would have gone over significantly better being written by literally anyone on Earth other than Kurtzman and Secret Hideout.

I watched lower decks and strange new worlds, I like them at lot!
I watched s1 picard and s1 discovery, thought they were only okay.
I’ve heard s3 picard is great so I will likely go back and give that another shot.
I haven’t gotten around to starfleet academy. If a shows rating is not great on sites like IMDB I don’t prioritise finding time for it. Hopefully they can turn it around.
I’m watching s4 bridgerton, I’m okay with relationship drama and romance as part of a show, star trek or otherwise. If you are going to do it you might as well go all in.

I tried to give it a go. Been a Trekkie all my life, but this show was too bad to watch. Every character felt like it was pandering to gen Z and not trying to present a future where we have move beyond these concerns and hatreds.

Why can’t Hollywood just make good shows any longer? Going out of their way to piss off people and be overly sexual. It’s just disgusting. Yes, the original had some skimpy outfits for the women, but we also got to see sweaty bare chested Sulu. That was cool. The show was horrible. We don’t even get Sulu without a shirt on.

People wonder why Hollywood seems so phony, it’s because of this. An actor has an actual unfiltered, human moment, speaking casually, the way we all speak, and suddenly it’s a major crisis and people are writing articles, and everyone has an opinion.

Frankly, after all the hype about the gay Klingon, I expected a lot more of it this season. War College Twink was only making eyes at him for the entire season.

That it goes out is the important thing to focus on here. I shan’t watch it, I watched all of s1 because I wanted to be able to be honest and not just brigade it without giving each episode a chance, but I have to say that it just wasn’t good, in any way shape or form and cancellation is a well-deserved final destination.

Writers need to start asking themselves – Are we writing the character specifically to have a gay character, are we writing a good character that happens to be gay?

Good! All the corporate merger bullshit means we might not see any more Trek for a while, and if we do then it’ll probably be the most sanitized nostaliga bait, so I’d hope for Academy to go out loud and proud.
And before the usual complaints: Every time the Academy was shown in any Trek show it was full of cocky teens pulling stupid shit, this is just the first time it wasn’t contained in a single bottle episode.

Legitimately nothing wrong with a gay character, but do even gay people think this somehow makes the show better? This is so pandering it feels insulting to gay people, like “don’t you love it guys, it’s gay!”

I have one big complaint about Jay-Den Kraag, but it’s not what you’d think.
I think the actor has been nailing the role, personally. He has a great Klingon voice and has great presence on screen. He looks and sounds and acts great.
But…
But they didn’t do the teeth. All the Klingons in *Starfleet Academy* have perfect white teeth.

The biggest problem with the representation of Klingons in this series is the bizarre, halting, caveman-like delivery of all their lines. Klingons certainly have a specific affect when speaking, but they speak smoothly and coherently! Jayden’s delivery takes me out every time.

I don’t care care how gay or “woke” or Starfleet Academy is. I care about how aggressively shit it is. The plots are stupid, the characters are some of the dumbest ever written, the dialogue scans like the first draft of a 10 year old and to top it all off the acting is roughly on the level of a ScyFy original from 20 years ago.
