Craig Newmark made hundreds of millions of dollars after founding the website Craigslist in the mid-1990s. “That’s too much money for anyone to have, so l’m giving most of it away to people and causes that need it.” (New York Times)

I love that! Why not be remembered for the good you brought into the world vs the wealth you hoarded?

This is one of the main reasons that there’s no such thing as a good or ethical billionaire, btw. Any morally decent person would have given away all that extra money before they could accrue a billion.

YES! Like the reason why so many things are named after say…Rockefeller or Hershey is because they actually used some of their money to give back to their local communities or charitable organizations! Millionaires use to start schools and fund libraries and fire houses! Let us return to that.

I love Craig, but we gotta stop thinking of philanthropy as a net good for society. Governments need to be taking the money and redistribute it through programs. Patronage is not a route to a national healthcare system or sustainable mass transit.

I love to read this.
My husband was watching something yesterday about the boxer Anthony Joshua, and about how he made £93m on his fight with whichever Paul brother it was, and had to give X amount to both the US and UK government in taxes. It left him with a paltry £43m; so he’s moving to Dubai where he can keep ALL his money.
It’s so distasteful. £43m on top of whatever else he has? Absolutely gross behaviour IMO.
