Growing up, my dad had a subscription to Mac Addict magazine, and one of the demo discs (I still have them!) included a trial of Maelstrom, a sort of Asteroids clone by the amazing architects of my gaming childhood: Ambrosia Software (Escape Velocity developers).
I'm rewatching all the Alien movies today, currently on Resurrection, and there is a brief scene where someone is playing a fictional game called "Atom Zone". They lose the game, their ship explodes, and it plays a sound effect of a guy yelling.
An ancient neuron fired, I rewound to hear it again, and no doubt – identical sound effect to when your ship blows up in Maelstrom. I even fired Maelstrom up in an in-browser emulator to be sure. I hacked together an awful, but hopefully serviceable, back-to-back video playing the scene from Alien, followed by a recording of the game.
I know this is obscure, and probably just coincidence that they used the same pack of sound effects, but MAYBE someone on the production/editing team did it on purpose because they also loved Maelstrom? Both sci-fi, both ships exploding…but a cursory Google search didn't find anyone mentioning the connection.
So, as of this post, there is now something added to the internet where the connection has been made, and to whoever added that sound effect to the movie – thank you and I see you.
