Seems they had a disagreement of some sort and the other guy was able to stand up and walk away. Unless police were called onto the scene, it seems like a disagreement they may have sorted out.

First, Alan is absolutely hitting him hard.
And the kids are still – like they’re waiting at a red light not watching an assault. Are they terrified? Or have they just *seen this* before?
Alan beats the guy, then turns his back to him. I guess he knew the guy was no threat, but I’m never going to turn my back to someone I just assaulted.
Then the guy who just got beat up is annoyed but also just walking around picking up items – seemingly unafraid of being attacked again?
Where was Alan going? Why he hit that curb like that? Is he drunk?
Then the guy who was assaulted, presumably for yelling at him, is seemingly continue to make an effort to engage in conversation with his attacker.
