Barry Keoghan on the hate he receives for the way he looks: “It’s made me really go inside myself, not want to go outside. It’s becoming a problem because then you don’t even want to be on screen anymore.””

  1. That’s actually really sad to hear. And especially for an actor when they know they’ll be projected onto massive screens. I hope he can gain back some confidence ❤️

I don’t think any celebrity should be on social media. Yes for their sakes but also because it takes away from their whole mystique and mystery. Same with press tours and everything. But obviously that will never go away. Got to sell that product!

    People suck.

Barry is a fine actor and handsome man. Folks tearing him down have far bigger personal problems then how some kid in Hollywood looks like.

  4. TelevisionOk6525 on

The harassment goes beyond his looks too. I remember he had to beg people to not stalk his grandmother and his child.

  5. Suspicious-turnip-77 on

This is so gross. I’m so bloody over people talking about others looks. Nasty, insecure assholes talk about people’s looks.

  6. Otherwise_Store4251 on

he honestly looks good to me, now i want one of the haters to show their face and have the rest judge it…same with each one of it

like hating on someone’s looks when you can’t find anything else to hate on is really low

I may be wrong, but I think this is a UK Vs US problem.

Here in the UK, actors (especially on tv series), look very … normal? Hair and makeup is everyday simple, outfits are jeans and a jacket. The emphasis is on the actor being the character (detective, office worker, retail worker, etc), and wanting them to look “normal”. Veneers and Botoxed faces would look out place for the context of the storyline.

US shows have everyone looking very polished and perfect.

Again, just my observation and may be wrong, but I imagine a lot of this criticism is from US social media. He looks very very average to me, and if I saw him in a British drama etc he would look in place with everyone else.

  8. Celebrities unless they have an ego of adamant should not go online and read comments about themselves. Likewise, if you’re an aging celebrity hiding behind a bunch of filters, you also aren’t going to want to go out in public revealing yourself as you really are or worse, go to an unethical surgeon and try to “fix” what was never wrong with you. Not everyone can pull a Lohan. Sometimes the results are actually really bad and even if they aren’t, if you show up with “new face” syndrome, it overshadows everything else.

He’s a literal actor. Even if he isn’t someone’s taste, clearly he’s attractive enough to be on tv (which I’m guessing the vast majorly of haters aren’t).

  10. Sometimes I wish I could grab people who share this sentiment (I share this sentiment about myself so sadly I get the complex feelings) and shake them and tell them how beautiful they are and how much like art they look and how taking away their individuality to look more appealing to others is soul crushing and harmful. And I wish they would really hear it and believe it.

  11. He has a distinct face. So does Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi. Barry gets too much hate. I think he’ll do really good as Ringo (he’s the best contender tbh!)

Im from Ireland and yeah he looks unique but above all his personality seems like one of a tit.

  13. brechts_piratejenny on

I always thought his “outlandish” looks were his biggest trait as an actor. He’s no run of the mill pretty Hollywood boy and that automatically made him a character actor in my eyes which is often the better career trajectory anyway. It’s a shame other people don’t see it that way.

  14. Aggressive-Outcome-6 on

I don’t see the problem. He looks Irish. Looks fine to me. With longer hair he does have soccer mom vibe but who even cares?

  15. Revolutionary_Low_90 on

People always start problems for no fucking reason. This dude isn’t even that fucking ugly, ffs.

  16. gottahavewine on

I find him attractive, and also, I’m tired of seeing the same Hollywood look on screen. It’s refreshing and necessary to have actors and actresses who look like typical people

  17. bananasoyamilk on

Yeah the amount of “memes” I’ve seen ridiculing his appearance is just awful, people rly lack basic empathy these days

  18. No-Potato-2672 on

He is an average looking fellow, nothing wrong with him

The people making the comments, are fucked up.

  19. yourmomsajoke on

He’s a perfectly normal looking fella. Only shite I’ve ever given him is when he was gallivanting the world with carpenter instead of being near his baby during the early bonding stages of the babs wee life.

Agree with another comment, likely Americans slagging his looks because they’re not used to normal looking celebs.

  20. I believe he was being harassed by Sabrina Carpenter fans after they broke up. He was being dragged before then though, because he just had a baby with his ex-girlfriend right before he started dating Sabrina.

Either way, social media lets people in a little too much. People never used to have this much access to celebrities and it opens up doors for people to give in to their darker impulses… like harassing an elderly grandmother because a celebrity you like was broken up with by her grandson. Or whatever the fuck their rationale is.

  21. I didn’t even realize Sabrina Carpenter wasn’t gay, let alone knew she dated him.

You learn something disappointing everyday I guess.

  22. He does seem to get a lot of hate just because he dated Sabrina Carpenter for like a month and they broke up, and of course people start speculating as to why.

He’s a great performer, it sucks that we are so comfortable talking about other’s looks, and it sucks that it’s not taken as seriously with men.

  23. Honestly I really do want to hold celebs accountable for the behavior of their fans at this point. Lowkey feels like the Taylor Swift playbook here. Like they know why their fans are harassing people who ‘wronged’ them and yet they just allow them to do this shit to someone. And this isn’t even the first time he’s had to beg people to stop this shit. Like how are you cool with your fans harassing your ex’s fucking grandmother just because yall broke up. I would be embarrassed and ashamed to allow this to happen without saying a single thing to try and stop it. Stan culture is literally a fucking disease but celebs weaponizing parasocial relationships is just as gross.

  24. And people wonder why so many celebrities are on ozempic and getting 101 cosmetic procedures to look “perfect”. Social media has made people way too parasocial and entitled with celebrities.

  25. onedemtwodem on

    He’s quirky/cute looking…
and a really good actor imo. Social media is so shitty… it’s ruining everything… Lives, sense of self and peace of mind … Really bleak

  26. the inability for people to be normal will deprive us of a good actor. when i was a kid people who aren’t attractive norm were allowed to have careers in entertainment and now it seems only certain look is allowed to exist. and i truly hate it.

  27. OkElephant4542 on

literally all the hate came after sabrina carpenter made vague comments on him post break up to clout up her music🙄 no one actually know what happened

  28. Did you see the pic of him and Jacob Elordi together? He’s covering his face from the eyes down

  29. He honestly looks identical to so many people in Dublin, so does Paul Mescal (I live in Dublin)

  30. KinNortheast on

There was a time where being famous was desirable. Internet, social media, bots, the stalking, the selfies- kinda sucks

  31. allofthelovelybooks on

I’ve always thought he was a good looking guy. I do think he needs a new stylist but whatever that’s easy. I think the online hate and Hollywood standards has caused him to get plastic surgery which really sucks. He has such a unique look that will serve him well as an actor. Some of the best actors have an instantly recognizable face like Cillian Murphy or Willem Dafoe.

  32. XcuseMeMisISpeakJive on

Poor guy. That would explain all the weird plastic surgery he’s gotten recently. People have given him a complex.

  33. Bro is awesome. I’ve been impressed since Killing of a Sacred Deer which was hilarious. Literally one of the most interesting actors around. I haven’t even seen the bathwater movie yet
