From 40 million to 17.9 million in 10 years

Going to youtube will completely kill what little relevance the Oscars have left.

Young people are not going to watch a 4 hour award show unless it is the video game awards (even then)

Interesting, I wonder why, Conan was great(when is he not) and I feel like some of the BP nominees had mass appeal.

  3. Long show, weaker movie interest for casual viewers, and people do not watch live the way they used to.

The Oscars still matter, but not in the old mass event way.

The production wasn’t very good this year: lots of audio issues, rudely and awkwardly cutting off several speeches that weren’t even that long, and comedy skits that didn’t land or went on too long.

The Oscars moving to YouTube is understandable less and less people are tuning into network television, they have to move to where the potential audience is at.

  6. No one cares to watch celebrities stroke each others egos. The show is boring and when it tries to be fun/funny it’s so forced and corny. Old MTV award shows were actually fun and celebrated the movies people actually watched. Not like 1-3 movies that make it into the zeitgeist and a bunch of good but fringe movies.

The entire show is build up to who wins the award. And then when they do win they force their speeches to be short. No need to watch the entire show when you can literally see the parts you care about online and in 2-5 minsof clips and save yourself four unbearable hours

Could it be the world is tired of the wealthy and powerful applauding and patting each other on the back?

  8. They did have competition. The US in the World Baseball Classic semifinals got over 7 million viewers, and that was on cable.

  9. I half over half a dozen streaming services including Hulu. I read that the awards were streaming on Hulu, and they weren’t. Tried to watch and couldn’t.

  10. First year in a few that I hadn’t seen anything that was nominated before the ceremony so I felt I had no stake in watching.

Sinners, Marty Supreme, One Battle, KPop Demon Hunters, and maybe Hamnet are all on the watchlist still. Maybe one of these weekends I’ll shut myself in and have a little marathon.

  11. When you have the ceremony so late, a lot of people just lose interest. A lot of professional movie critics had Oscar fatigue by the time they came around.

  12. Doesn’t help they refuse to allow live watching on hulu/Disney without the expanded subscription. Bunch of bullshit.

I didn’t even know it was Oscars night until I saw a post on Reddit saying an actor won an Oscar… And I can’t even remember who that actor was…

Well I watched an illegal stream because I couldn’t find a legal place to watch it that didn’t cost $80. I tried to sign up for a Fubo free subscription but I couldn’t. Next year on YT the numbers are going to be very different
