And we're continuing with the romance tropes. This one is probably the most common one in real life: friendship to lovers. Suprisingly, it's not as common as the other romance tropes, probably because friends who become lovers just isn't that exciting to portray onscreen. But there are some wonderful examples:
-
Breakfast at Tiffany's: a kept man and a kept woman become friends before they become lovers
-
When Harry Met Sally – maybe the alpha and omega of this trope
-
Emma – Jane Austen also used this trope masterfully. The 1996 film with Gwyneth Paltrow is wonderful, and it features a performance by the amazing Polly Walker, who is Mama Featherington in Bridgerton (7th slide)
-
Monica and Chandler of Friends – both neurotic, both slightly dorky. Not a surprise they got together.
-
Jim and Pam of The Office – another alpha and omega of this trope
-
Mulder and Scully of X-files: debated whether they were really friends-to-lovers, since they were more professional partners, but decided they count
-
Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton of S3 of Bridgerton – childhood friends who become lovers
-
Richie and Jess on The Bear – it hasn't happened yet, but it will.

paul is a gay hustler in breakfast at tiffany’s, not a love interest for holly golightly
The inclusion of Breakfast at Tiffany’s on this list makes me angry lol
Friends to lovers is my favorite trope. The idea that someone saw you at your most relaxed, your most dressed down, and still picks you I think it’s just so beautiful. Chandler and Monica are my favorite of this trope by a long shot.

This sorta breaks the prompt, since it was short lived and we barely get to see any cutesy moments to call it super romantic, but Elaine and Jerry going from lovers to friends to lovers and then back to friends

The Nanny comes to mind for me. Damn, I loved that show back in the day.
Mr. Sheffield and Fran are iconic in the most relevant sense of the word.
I hate this because it likes saying a man and a woman cant be friends.
Its because of these kind of shows/movies, men think they can manipulate women and fake being friends so they can get « in ».
Emma and Dexter in One Day
I don’t think Jim and Pam really count as a part of this trope, Jim clearly had the hots for her from the very beginning.
well i know they’re technically frenemies to friends to lovers, but my supremes >

I am very pleased to see the 96 Emma representation.
“Brother and sister? No, indeed we are not.” 🔥
