I honestly don’t get the backlash. Opera is not a popular kind of entertainment and has drastically declined from its heyday. It doesn’t mean it’s not a respectable art and that opera singers are talented. He’s only saying he was worried cinema’s popularity was also in decline.

Theater is significantly older than Opera, and look how prevalent it is until this day. Many actors/actresses perform theater. Both artforms carry centuries of rigorous craft.

He’s right. Cinema has been replaced by streaming platforms, as opera at his time had been replaced by major theatre and then cinema. Each of this form of art became more rare because of another form of art competing and easier of access. The rarety of cinemas (physicial place) makes the cinema (art form) elitist. But we need to keep fighting for cinemas to reopen again, cinema is important for critical thinking in a democracy
