Some reviews:

Anthony O'Connor, FILMINK (Australia) 15.5/20 – Far more engaging than any seventh film in a horror franchise has any right to be.

Simon Foster, Screen-Space (Substack) – MVP is Courteney Cox, back as tart-mouthed reporter Gale Weathers, and Williamson films a good slashin’, but it seems naggingly reductive and strained.

Cain Noble-Davies, FILMINK (Australia) 9.5/20 – Do you like scary movies? Maybe give this one a miss, then.

Manuel São Bento, Movies We Texted About D+ – Without its ability to satirize the real world and shock through genuine creativity, this seventh chapter gets lost in its own references, forgetting that for a story to stay alive, it’s not enough to just replicate the echoes of what came before.

  1. Bento’s review is what I felt about the movie (haven’t seen it yet), that it would lean so hard on the first movie that it would just make you want to watch it instead, instead of carving its own path.

  2. Shit, they’re at 7 now? I remember watching and being disappointed in 4. Must have missed 5 and 6 releasing.

I’m sure this movie will make bank opening weekend. But I’m most curious about word of mouth which I’m thinking will be pretty bad if the leaks and spoilers are to be believed.

  4. Not surprising considering all the behind the scenes issues this movie had.

Firing of Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega dropping out, original director Christopher Landon leaving, having to rewrite the whole script with Neve back as the lead.

Welp maybe they shouldn’t have fumbled two of the best things to happen to the series in Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera….

  6. What is going on in Australia that they rank movies on a scale of 1-20? It’s like Homer Simpson giving food seven thumbs up.

  7. Not too surprised, but I was kind of hoping 7 would continue the pattern of “1 great, 2 okay, 3 bad, 4 good, 5 okay, 6 bad” and be another good one.

  8. Reminds me of Halloween Kills. Lots of cool kills but a nonsensical movie outside the kills. Considering Scream has almost always been critically well received, the fact it might not even come out fresh is kind of crazy.

I think everyone made their mind up of this movie after they got rid of the cast for Scream 5 and 6.

  10. I think around Scream 4’s score is where it’ll end up. I think many critics had it out for this one so it was doomed to a lower score then the mediocre sixth film from the get go.

Rushed movie, awful character development for the new characters, i hoped it was another scream 5 but they failed, really fast pacing and it was bad enough to hope that stu could come back, now im waiting for scream 8 because this was clearly rushed bc of melissa situation and mark my words they will ask her to come back, i hope they get more time to release scream 8 so they can have a solid script
    6/10 but fun enough.

Its so weak. I thought the motivation of the killer sucked. It took away a lot from the buildup. The killings were amazing though sometimes corny. Some characters were underutilized, too, I noticed.

Sad because 6 was really really strong.

  13. Material-Brief-8114 on

Given we’re into Wednesday going into Thursday early screenings and theres still an embargo on reviews does not bode well for the critical response.

My take away from early reviews is basically this.

If you’re a diehard Scream fan you’ll probably like most of this film and will happily go down the nostalgia rabbit hole with it.

If your however a bit more discerning you’ll probably find it derivative and hollow.

One thing everyone agrees on though is the main plot twist is rather dumb and baited everyone which will likely not land well and the ghost face  reveal is terrible.

Still guess we’ll see what the main reviews say once the embargo lifts.

  14. I unironically think this movie getting mixed/negative reception would create a better eighth movie. If it happens, of course.

While 5 was well received, fans did have complaints and the writers spoke about incorporating those concerns into the next movie and it went over very well.
