Yikes. I know the man that said it has Tourette’s and so of course it’s possible it’s just related to that, but I really hope at the very least he apologises to both of them.

  2. Man……. Awkwardness in the room was probably at an all time high. Feel terrible for MBJ and Delroy, much respect to them holding their head high and continuing through it.

I wonder if he shouted any other racial epithets, homophobic slurs or anti-Semitic language towards any other presenters? Of course he didn’t. I can only imagine the feeling of humiliation and derogation they felt in a room full of their peers. Really disgusting.

There’s no way nobody didn’t see this coming. People with Tourette’s are known to spontaneously scream out profanities. The only way for this to not happen, is for the person to not be there. Even being heavily medicated or taking something medicinally, does not always completely stop it.

  5. Important to note John Davidson has a form of Tourette’s which includes Coprolalia, he has no control over this and it usually leads you to say the most inappropriate thing. When he met the queen and screamed “fuck the queen” as well as telling the palace he had a bomb. I would hope the BAFTA organisers would have warned attendees about it so that they’re aware as it obviously is horrible for them to hear. However I am seeing so much stigma online about the incident and those suffering with Tourette’s. It’s important to remember it was likely and almost definitely not done with racist intentions and that he is probably feeling absolutely awful about it. I expect he will apologise, but i do feel disheartened to see so many ableist comments surrounding Tourette’s, for which there is no cure.

  6. Even if he can’t control it, it still causes harm and he should apologize.

We always say that it’s an explanation not an excuse for other conditions, why not this one?

  7. I feel sorry for the actors but I also feel sorry for the man with Tourette’s. It’s a tough disability to have.

I’m torn on this. I get that it’s a disease but like you can’t just go around calling people the N-word. You are an actual danger to yourself and others if you do that. And if you can’t control your symptoms enough to not, then maybe it’s not a good idea for you to do big, public-facing events like this.

  9. “People with Tourette Syndrome (TS) who say “bad things”—a symptom known as coprolalia—do so because of involuntary vocal tics caused by faulty brain wiring, specifically in the basal ganglia, which disrupts the ability to inhibit unwanted thoughts. It is a rare, complex, and uncontrollable urge, not a reflection of personality or conscious intent.”

It’d be great if we could stop the ableism in these comments. This guy has an extremely challenging medical condition. Yes the situation is horrible but saying he must’ve meant it, he did it on purpose, or he should’ve never been allowed to attend is just ignorance and ableism. It’s a neurological condition, not a metal illness.

Ugh this is horrible :/ I get that he has Tourette’s and it isn’t on purpose or intentional on his part but this is so humiliating for Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo 😒

He shouldn’t be going to LIVE award ceremonies if he can’t keep his Tourettes in check. Highly unprofessional & disgusting.

  12. Sorry but although I do understand this is an element of tourettes you shouldn’t be able to attend a live event (where you can be heard) and make others uncomfortable, especially when it’s supposed to be a night about celebrating people.

Coprolalia means they were commenting taboo things in every situation, right?

I think it can help dispel some pain if we can see that everyone was experiencing the same thing not just the African American and African presenters.

Also— why does the person have to be present for the announcements?

If I knew I was going to be screaming something during a quiet moment that can be traumatic for the other party, I don’t feel like I need to be right there in the room while they’re being filmed in front of an entire audience. ? Like I can wait in the lobby for 5 minutes; why not set the show up that way???

Or film them in a lounge or VIP area. *Meaning they’re at the event and just not in the same room, and can be present via remote/screen.

I need to google how Coprolalia is “treated” or how it’s navigated.

Ofc he was going to call them something racist because that’s the worst thing he could do at that moment. No matter who gave that award they would have had something inappropriate yelled at them so I would assume they had been informed about it ahead of time.

I’m willing to give him a bit of grace if he were shouting other epithets and slurs at other presenters. But it’s giving a dementia patient who hasn’t forgotten to be racist towards their Black caretaker.

  16. As a black person I’m humiliated for them. Took away from their moment and they’re forced to not react because it’s someone’s disability…. we get fucked every way possible. That person shouldn’t have been there and I stand on that.

  17. Coprolalia is an involuntary symptom of Tourette’s. And no one should be subjected to slurs. I don’t really know what the solution to this is. This is just a bad situation all around.

  18. well down vote me but he should’ve been removed. Tourettes does not make you hurl slurs at people. And if it did he would’ve said it to other people, not two Black men.

I hope he issues a public apology. I understand it’s a symptom of the disease but to hear that word while you’re onstage in a room full of your peers. That’s fucked up. Good for Michael and Delroy for powering through that because I would’ve teared up hearing that word thrown at me, intentionally or not.

I feel bad for everyone involved but I low-key feel like Jordan and Lindo were set up for this to happen. They could have presented for anything else. But this is what they got? Shame on the BAFTAs.

While it’s unfortunate for John, who cannot help himself, I truly feel awful for both Michael and Delroy. These two men don’t deserve to walk up on that stage and face racism like that even if it was not meant or accidental.

I feel for all three men. The kindest accommodation would have been to place John Davidson somewhere that he wouldn’t be heard.
